{"id":67480,"date":"2022-04-20T04:00:05","date_gmt":"2022-04-19T18:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=67480"},"modified":"2022-04-12T17:13:19","modified_gmt":"2022-04-12T07:13:19","slug":"refugees-share-stories-of-hope-and-opportunity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/refugees-share-stories-of-hope-and-opportunity\/","title":{"rendered":"Refugees share stories of hope and opportunity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An inspiring collection of short stories conveying the experiences of a group of young Australian asylum seeks has been launched in Aireys Inlet.<\/p>\n<p>More than 60 people attended the launch of The Shape of Hope which was organised by the Aireys Inlet Rural Australians for Refugees group (AIRAR).<\/p>\n<p>The stories shared within The Shape of Hope are forward-looking and full of hope, while demonstrating resilience, hard work and aspiration in an often unjust society.<\/p>\n<p>Surf Coast mayor Libby Stapleton attended the launch, saying it was an absolute privilege to spend the afternoon with the asylum seekers, AIRAR and the Hope Co-op.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_67482\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67482\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-67482 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/658065BD-C34F-4BAF-8EFF-459A2BE72596.jpg?_t=1649747351\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/658065BD-C34F-4BAF-8EFF-459A2BE72596.jpg 800w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/658065BD-C34F-4BAF-8EFF-459A2BE72596-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/658065BD-C34F-4BAF-8EFF-459A2BE72596-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-67482\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The stories shared within The Shape of Hope are forward-looking and full of hope, while demonstrating resilience, hard work and aspiration.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Hope Co-op empowers and supports young refugees to achieve a tertiary education in Australia,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;(The book contains) remarkable stories from young Australians who are not afforded the privileges so many of us take for granted.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>One refugee who contributed to the book spoke of how she was just 12 when her father went to hospital in Pakistan but never returned to Kabul having passed away.<\/p>\n<p>She came to Australia by boat from Indonesia with her mother and sister on a three-day journey in which several refugees tragically drowned.<\/p>\n<p>Once in an Australian high school, she and her sister studied day and night hoping for high marks in order to gain university scholarships and the promise of a brighter future.<\/p>\n<p>Now completing a Bachelor of Science degree she hopes to eventually qualify as a doctor.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In building my life I never gave up hope,&#8221; she told those at the launch.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_67484\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67484\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-67484 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/B33E3543-CE2E-46F4-8224-FBBC903BBAD9.jpg?_t=1649747360\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/B33E3543-CE2E-46F4-8224-FBBC903BBAD9.jpg 800w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/B33E3543-CE2E-46F4-8224-FBBC903BBAD9-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/B33E3543-CE2E-46F4-8224-FBBC903BBAD9-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/B33E3543-CE2E-46F4-8224-FBBC903BBAD9-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-67484\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One refugee who contributed to the book spoke of how she was just 12 when her father went to hospital in Pakistan but never returned to Kabul having passed away.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Since migrating to Australia I have learnt that there is no medicine as strong as hope for keeping us healthy \u2026 even in hard times, in sickness and downtimes I&#8217;ve learned to fight harder for my dreams.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hope has not only kept me alive but taught me to love myself and others.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Hope Foundation provides life skills, personal support and connections for refugees from Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and New Guinea.<\/p>\n<p>The foundation also develops partnerships with universities which provide scholarships, as well as raising money to supply modest living grants to students of $6000 per year.<\/p>\n<p>AIRAR is one of the groups who contribute to this through the generosity of the Surf Coast community.<\/p>\n<p>The book launch was also attended by shire councillor Mike Bodsworth, AIRAR patron Hannie Rayson and Radio National presenter Michael Cathcart.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An inspiring collection of short stories conveying the experiences of a group of young Australian asylum seeks has been launched in Aireys Inlet.
