A DEDICATED squad of Torquay locals exceeded their ambitious Good Friday Appeal fundraising goal by more than $3000.<\/p>\n
The combined effort from members of Torquay Lions Club and Torquay RSL surpassed their fundraising goal of $10,000, raising more than $13,000 for the charity.<\/p>\n
“Our local community was so generous,” fundraising coordinator Peter McMahon said.<\/p>\n
“We not only achieved our target, but Lions and RSL members finished the day with $13,100 for this year’s Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal.”<\/p>\n
Mr McMahon said the virtual tin rattle contributed to this year’s high tally which provided an alternative for people who did not carry notes or coins.<\/p>\n
“This was the first year we added QR codes as a means of accepting donations from those who did not have cash,” Mr McMahon said.<\/p>\n
“The virtual tin recorded 52 donations totalling $2,720, placing us within the top 15 per cent of state listings.<\/p>\n
“Last year, we raised $6,500. Doubling that figure almost leaves me speechless.”<\/p>\n
Members from the Lions Club and RSL had crucial help from Deakin University, Grovedale Fire Brigade and other volunteers to achieve the impressive total.<\/p>\n
“I thank all who supported the appeal so generously,” Mr McMahon said.<\/p>\n
The Good Friday Appeal continues to resonate with countless families who have been somehow affected by the RCH, whether directly or by way of a relative.<\/p>\n
“Almost every family has been touched as the Children’s Hospital has helped so many youngsters.<\/p>\n
“We are retaining the virtual tin for further weeks to enable any late donors to still contribute.”<\/p>\n
Official fundraising amounts per region for the Good Friday Appeal will be released in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n
