{"id":68954,"date":"2022-05-06T04:45:14","date_gmt":"2022-05-05T18:45:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=68954"},"modified":"2022-05-04T11:13:53","modified_gmt":"2022-05-04T01:13:53","slug":"council-opens-sports-census-for-future-planning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/sport\/council-opens-sports-census-for-future-planning\/","title":{"rendered":"Council opens sports census for future planning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>QUESTIONS regarding facility usage, female participation and required upgrades will encompass just some of the city\u2019s newly opened sports census.<\/p>\n<p>The annual City of Greater Geelong Sports and Recreation Census is now open for the local clubs and organisations to provide participation data to council which will outline future infrastructure projects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe survey questions focus on who, when and how people are using our facilities and reserves,\u201d deputy mayor Trent Sullivan said.<\/p>\n<p>According to the city\u2019s website, the census aims to understand the constraints on pavilions and reserves, identify gaps, opportunities and address challenges associated with specific clubs, and to better understand local trends sports-wise to lend itself to future strategic planning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cContinuing population growth means we need to plan carefully for investment in both new facilities and renewal of our existing assets,\u201d Cr Sullivan said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis census will play an important role in helping us to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The census also considers frequency and amount factors, whether it be how many ovals\/pitches\/courts a club\u2019s venue holds or how many times facilities are used per week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClubs taking part will give council a clearer understanding of their club and its members, helping us to better support their organisation and sport into the future,\u201d Cr Sullivan said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will also collect data from sporting associations and governing bodies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Most notably, the census hints at types of projects that council is most likely to undertake going forward evidenced by a question asking, \u2018What part of your facility\/oval\/court\/pitch\/venue do you believe needs upgrading?\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 593px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/05\/IMG_3776_54746.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"593\" height=\"395\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Manifold Heights Cricket Club&#8217;s Damian Tom (right) next to Geelong city councillor Eddy Kontelj.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Options for response include lights, pavilion, changerooms, surface condition and sporting equipment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCouncil recognises the huge positive impact of sporting participation on our community\u2019s physical and mental health, so we want to encourage and support participation as best we can,\u201d Cr Sullivan said.<\/p>\n<p>Local club representatives can access this year\u2019s census by heading to yoursay.geelongaustralia.com.au\/SP-5-2021\/sport-and-recreation-survey.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>QUESTIONS regarding facility usage, female participation and required upgrades will encompass just some of the city\u2019s newly opened sports census.
