{"id":68956,"date":"2022-05-05T04:45:58","date_gmt":"2022-05-04T18:45:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=68956"},"modified":"2022-05-05T17:29:49","modified_gmt":"2022-05-05T07:29:49","slug":"cats-pounce-on-hawks-at-packed-out-home-opener","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/sport\/cats-pounce-on-hawks-at-packed-out-home-opener\/","title":{"rendered":"Cats pounce on Hawks at packed out home opener"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LAST Saturday\u2019s NBL1 Geelong Supercats double-header was the first time in almost three years that a sell-out crowd witnessed a basketball game as the Ringwood Hawks entered enemy territory.<\/p>\n<p>Both the men and women prevailed over the Melbourne-based Hawks in convincing fashion.<\/p>\n<p>Geelong\u2019s women fought hard to stave off a persistent Ringwood side in the opening bout of the night, taking home a 63-54 triumph and providing some good energy in The Arena prior to the men\u2019s game.<\/p>\n<p>Sara Blicavs led the way with 17 points, 12 rebounds and four assists, meanwhile Aimie Rocci made a solid return on the night with 15 points, five assists and a pair of steals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe definitely did more in the first half more than the second half, but we have lots to learn, and it was a great first home game and we\u2019ll take any kind of win even it\u2019s a bit scrappy and I\u2019m just happy for the girls,\u201d Blicavs said post-game.<\/p>\n<p>The Supercats\u2019 men were firing on all cylinders as they torched Ringwood across four quarters as every player on the roster scored in what was an absolute treat for close to 2,000 spectators.<\/p>\n<p>The night was big for DeMarcus Gatlin who put on a show for Supercats fans after almost three years away from the region.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 527px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/05\/0M0A1591_86289.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"527\" height=\"352\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Demarcus Gatlin returned to Geelong Arena for the first time in three years.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The former NBL1 MVP was key to the team\u2019s 110-59 drubbing of Ringwood finishing with 13 points, seven rebounds and three steals.<\/p>\n<p>Gabe Hadley led the way in points with 27, while Isaac Smith had an awesome night with 26 points and three steals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt felt amazing, we got a bunch of kids here, it was pretty much packed out, so it was good to be home,\u201d Gatlin said at the conclusion of the night.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 501px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/05\/2H3A9561_56440.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"501\" height=\"334\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Supercats new life members (left to right) Keith Harrison, Nathan Herbert, Paul Hutchinson and Sebastian Loader.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The women unfortunately fell to the Bendigo Braves the following day on Sunday, but the men kept their hot start to the season going improving their record to 3-0.<\/p>\n<p>Geelong hosts Keilor Thunder this Saturday night back at home.
