{"id":69331,"date":"2022-05-17T04:15:12","date_gmt":"2022-05-16T18:15:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=69331"},"modified":"2022-05-11T13:04:56","modified_gmt":"2022-05-11T03:04:56","slug":"fifty-years-of-pies-and-good-times-for-margaret-purcell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/fifty-years-of-pies-and-good-times-for-margaret-purcell\/","title":{"rendered":"Fifty years of pies and good times for Margaret Purcell"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FITTINGLY, on Mother\u2019s Day weekend, the Anglesea FNC has honoured trail-blazing club volunteer and mother-of-three Margaret Purcell for 50-plus years of service, with the club\u2019s canteen renamed in recognition of the 80-year-old\u2019s continued efforts.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Purcell has been making the drive down from Belmont to Anglesea\u2019s home games for over 50 years and, according to her family, hasn\u2019t missed a game.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur mum has been assisting in the canteen for as long as I can remember, we basically lived here as kids,\u201d Margaret\u2019s son Bernard Purcell said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the course of her 50-year stint, I don\u2019t think she\u2019s ever missed a game and has always given her absolute all in any volunteering aspect that the club has put forward\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Purcell originally came down to the Anglesea FNC when her late husband Barry transferred down to the seaside club thanks to the help of a friend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMum came down to the club when one of Dad\u2019s friends convinced him to play,\u201d Mr Purcell recalled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhilst Dad would be out on the field, Mum was running the canteen and volunteering her time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Soon after, Margaret\u2019s three sons Kevin, Terry and Bernard would become Anglesea footballers themselves, giving the 80-year-old another reason to continue her amazing support to the club whilst husband Barry would run the bar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMum stayed on at the canteen throughout our careers at the club and loved it so much that she ended up staying and volunteering her time on a Saturday when we left to play for Bell Park.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMum had made so many amazing connections at the club that she didn\u2019t want to leave and rightfully so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Purcell\u2019s family said their mother never wanted to seek any reward for her efforts, but simply wanted to positively impact others in the community and lend her time to make her friends and family happy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe is just a saint, always wanting to assist wherever she can.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStill to this day, she drives elderly people to their hospital appointments, assists in school and outreach food programs and obviously does her part in the Anglesea Football Netball Club canteen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo have her name up at the club is just an amazing touch and something that our whole family is proud of.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bar is named after our late father Barry Purcell and now our mother is given this beautiful token for her efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Standing in front of the canteen plaque at the presentation, Mrs Purcell couldn\u2019t thank the club enough for all the friendships and great times that it had provided her with.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m so overwhelmed by the beautiful gesture that the club has done today. I absolutely love this club and all the amazing friends that I have made over my 50 years of being here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She was joined by members of the family at the presentation, with the 80-year-old holding back tears as she spoke of her heartfelt gratitude.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_69337\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-69337\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-69337 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/IMG_7698-Bernie-Margaret-Evie-Molly-Kevin-and-Pearl-600x380.jpg?_t=1652142317\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-69337\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Margaret Purcell surrounded by family at the plaque presentation.
