Green Army starts work at Barham River THE federal government is rolling out another of its Green Army projects in the region, with works at Barham River starting this week.
\nCorangamite federal member Sarah Henderson said the Barham River Restoration Project aimed to enhance the health of the river system between Apollo Bay and the Marengo Flora Reserve.
\n\u201cThe team will work with Southern Otway Landcare to focus on weed control and improve the health of the waterway.
\n“During the six month program we will see first-hand improvements made to our local environment through activities undertaken by the Green Army.
\n\u201cParticipants aged between 17 and 24 will not only be generating real environment and conservation valuable practical training and experience to help them prepare for the workforce or further training and improve their career opportunities.
\n\u201cThere are now 13 completed, active or soon-to-commence Green Army projects across Corangamite.\u201d
\nIn Apollo Bay, the Southern Otway Landcare Network will undertake another two projects along the Great Ocean Road, and the VFF Farm Tree and Landcare Association has already started works in the Central Otways.
\n\u201cThe Green Army is a very important part of our government\u2019s investment in helping young people into work,\u201d Ms Henderson said.
\n\u201cAcross Corangamite, there have been many examples of young people moving from a Green Army project into full time work, which is very exciting.
\n\u201cRight across Australia, the Green Army is making a real difference to the environment and local communities through projects such as restoring and protecting habitat, weeding, planting, cleaning up creeks and rivers and restoring cultural heritage places.
\n\u201cThe Green Army will become Australia’s largestever team supporting environmental action across the country, building up to 15,000 young Australians from 2018.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
