{"id":69414,"date":"2022-05-13T04:00:29","date_gmt":"2022-05-12T18:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=69414"},"modified":"2022-05-13T10:07:06","modified_gmt":"2022-05-13T00:07:06","slug":"expansion-of-protected-wetlands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/expansion-of-protected-wetlands\/","title":{"rendered":"Expansion of protected wetlands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A LONG-AWAITED boundary review of the region\u2019s Ramsar wetlands and other sites considered worthy of greater environmental protections has been released for comment by the state government.<\/p>\n<p>Eleven new wetland areas have been identified as eligible for inclusion under the internationally recognised convention listing, in addition to the six distinct Port Phillip Bay (Western Shoreline) and Bellarine Peninsula Ramsar site wetland areas that were originally defined in 1982.<\/p>\n<p>The sites include Point Cook, Point Wilson, Avalon Coast, Moolap Point Henry, the Lake Connewarre Complex that covers Breamlea and Karaaf, coastal areas of St Leonards and Edwards Point \u2013 Swan Bay, as well the Lonsdale Lakes.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SY_lSD_FdBg\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) has set up an online portal that includes surveys for public feedback and registration for online community drop-in sessions between now and June 10.<\/p>\n<p>After public consultation closes in June, feedback will be reviewed and analysed by DELWP until December, when the finalised list and approvals are prepared for submission to the federal government that has the final decision regarding additions to the Ramsar site.<\/p>\n<p>The review is important for future protection of many of the wetland areas, particularly the Lake Connewarre Complex that includes the Karaaf and Breamlea wetlands, which are under significant pressure from urban development on their fringes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s terrific, they\u2019ve redrawn the boundaries, expanded a lot of the edges where really it should have been before,\u201d The Sands Owners Corporation president Andy McCauley said of the listing.<\/p>\n<p>Backing on to the Karaaf wetlands, residents of The Sands development are acutely aware of the area\u2019s delicate environment, prior to buying in to the estate each is required to sign up to an environmental management plan that includes protections for the wetlands.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_69648\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-69648\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-69648 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/Pool-in-article-91.png?_t=1652249354\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/Pool-in-article-91.png 600w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/Pool-in-article-91-300x190.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-69648\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Eleven new wetland areas have been identified as eligible for Ramsar site listing.
