Now he will.<\/p>\n<p>Geelong will be represented by one of its own at the 2022 Commonwealth Games when judo athlete Bensted puts on the green and gold later this year in Birmingham, United Kingdom in Australia\u2019s 12-judoka team.<\/p>\n<p>The now two-time Commonwealth Games athlete joins teammate Katharina H\u00e4ecker as the only judokas to represent Australia twice at the once-every-four-year event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo join Katharina as a two-time Australian judo representative is a pretty cool achievement, and something I am incredibly proud of,\u201d Bensted said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am excited to be a part of our 12 judokas squad. We are motivating each other every day to improve, and I can\u2019t wait to join the whole Australian team in Birmingham.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bensted was both excited and relieved when he first received the call that he would be representing his country again, but now the hard work begins as he looks to build upon his third-place finish at the Games in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 423px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/05\/20220518_BTWL_CG-Ju_49888.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"423\" height=\"282\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bensted (bottom right) surrounded by his Australian teammates.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s always stressful when you\u2019re waiting to see if you made the team, but now I\u2019m very excited,\u201d Bensted said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone back at home in Geelong will be very excited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt won\u2019t just be me going over to Birmingham, everyone who has helped me along the journey will also be going, not in-person but definitely in spirit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bensted has earned plenty of success throughout his career and will aim for more when he competes in the Men\u2019s 73kg division at 28 years of age.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWinning bronze at the Glasgow 2014 Games was the highlight of my career so far, so I am excited for this opportunity to represent Australia again,\u201d Bensted said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI started judo when I was six years old, that\u2019s about 22 years now, so it\u2019s been quite a while, but I grew up surrounded by cousins and it was always a bit rough and tumble, which I really enjoy about judo, just the physicality of it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery time I compete it\u2019s like a real test when you\u2019re fighting someone else, one mistake and it could all be over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 419px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/05\/20220518_BTWL_CG-Ju_11512.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"419\" height=\"279\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jake Bensted was the 100th Commonwealth Games athlete announced so far for Birmingham.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Judo at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham will be held from Monday, August 1, through to Wednesday, August 3, at Coventry Arena.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WHEN Geelong\u2019s Jake Bensted was first taken to the mat at six years of age, he didn\u2019t expect to be a two-time Commonwealth Games athlete.
