{"id":71333,"date":"2022-06-12T04:00:36","date_gmt":"2022-06-11T18:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=71333"},"modified":"2022-06-08T12:20:26","modified_gmt":"2022-06-08T02:20:26","slug":"storytime-at-the-community-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/storytime-at-the-community-house\/","title":{"rendered":"Storytime at the Community House"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>HELPING the community and its citizens flourish is a key part of any town\u2019s makeup and it\u2019s no different in Torquay with Surf Coast Secondary College Year 9 students doing their bit to assist the next generation.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, five Year 9 students from the college took a group of preschool students and their parents through comprehensive literary activities to assist not only the students\u2019 skills but also to foster and develop the skills of the next generation.<\/p>\n<p>The program, which occurs every Tuesday at the Torquay Community House between 9.30-10am, is a key developmental program for the students to improving their literacy and mentoring skills while providing a much-needed service for the community.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_71336\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-71336\" style=\"width: 679px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-71336 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/IMG_2920_86115.jpg?_t=1654572985\" alt=\"\" width=\"679\" height=\"453\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-71336\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Smiles all round. Photo: NATHAN RIVALLAND<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur kids are amazing and so enthusiastic to help out the young ones through this career and development-based partnership with the Community House,\u201d Surf Coast Secondary College teacher Katrina Simpson said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we heard that the house were struggling to get people to run the storytime sessions, we got in touch and wanted to help out.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_71334\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-71334\" style=\"width: 831px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-71334 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/IMG_2928_76785.jpg?_t=1654572939\" alt=\"\" width=\"831\" height=\"554\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-71334\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Children also get to play with arts and crafts as part of the session.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe program is an amazing way of our students learning mentoring and teamwork strategies so that when they do move into the workforce and towards adulthood, they can have had that experience of being a role model and a teacher for these younger children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy exploring different themes in each week\u2019s stories, as well as participating in building exercise with playdough and crafts, both the students and the young preschoolers get plenty of enjoyment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The storytime sessions have access to the top picture books in the country, with titles shortlisted for Book Week included during the half-hour morning program.<\/p>\n<p>The college and the community house look forward to continuing the program long into the future.<\/p>\n<p>To get your child involved in\u00a0the program, email administration@torquaycommunityhouse.org.au or phone 5261 2583.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>HELPING the community and its citizens flourish is a key part of any town\u2019s makeup and it\u2019s no different in Torquay with Surf Coast Secondary College Year 9 students doing their bit to assist the next generation.
