{"id":71498,"date":"2022-06-09T04:30:29","date_gmt":"2022-06-08T18:30:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=71498"},"modified":"2022-06-09T04:30:29","modified_gmt":"2022-06-08T18:30:29","slug":"lions-and-tigers-come-together-for-reconciliation-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/sport\/lions-and-tigers-come-together-for-reconciliation-week\/","title":{"rendered":"Lions and Tigers come together for Reconciliation Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WINTER Reserve on Saturday facilitated song, dance and welcoming, but also a plea to instigate change as the Belmont Lions hosted its annual National Reconciliation Week game.<\/p>\n<p>Joining the pre-game ceremonies and the President\u2019s Lunch was the Bannockburn Football and Netball Club, a first for the organisation as the Tigers fully embraced being a part of the momentous day.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 624px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/06\/IMG_2938_78893.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"624\" height=\"416\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gunditjimara and Wadawurrung dancers Jordan Edwards, Lowell Hunter and Jade Kennedy.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHistorically this game has always been against Corio, but we want to spread the message and educate people from all over the region about what Reconciliation Week is,\u201d Belmont Football and Netball president Mark Edwards said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast year we held the day with East Geelong, and they loved it, so we\u2019re starting to get more clubs and people to see the bigger picture, having everyone together and understanding that we all come from different cultures and backgrounds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year it was Bannockburn and who knows, next year it might be a club like Bell Post Hill or someone else and that\u2019s what we want, we want everyone to have this journey with us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 618px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/06\/IMG_3006_95814.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"618\" height=\"413\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Belmont and Bannockburn&#8217;s netball sides battling it out.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the opening bounce, both clubs lined up on the Winter Reserve oval before a smoking ceremony took place with every player placing a leaf into the ceremonial fire.<\/p>\n<p>Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-operative chair Craig Edwards gave a welcoming speech to the crowd before Gunditjimara and Wadawurrung dancers Jade Kennedy, Jordan Edwards and Lowell Hunter took centre stage.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 617px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/06\/IMG_2872_85476.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"617\" height=\"412\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Belmont FNC vice president and Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-operative chair Craig Edwards addressing those in attendance.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The two clubs\u2019 Firsts teams split the results between the two sporting codes as Belmont\u2019s netball (47-41) and Bannockburn\u2019s football (161-57) walked away with wins, but for First Nation people like Mr Edwards, the day is about more than just sport.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReconciliation is about closing the gap, it\u2019s about all of us as Australians helping a demographic only making up 2.8 per cent of the population that has been dispossessed, removed, isolated, treated with injustice and makes up 28 per cent of the jailed population,\u201d Edwards said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are still intrinsic issues in our society that need to be addressed, our mob live eight years less than the average Australian and Aboriginal home ownership in a population of about 800,000 Aboriginal people is just 11 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe football and netball jumper is a process of explaining to people that we are here, but there is a bigger picture, and everyone seems to be missing it.
