{"id":71828,"date":"2022-06-19T04:00:03","date_gmt":"2022-06-18T18:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=71828"},"modified":"2022-06-15T11:31:42","modified_gmt":"2022-06-15T01:31:42","slug":"never-give-up-surf-pioneer-ray-wilson-returns-to-town","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/never-give-up-surf-pioneer-ray-wilson-returns-to-town\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Never give up&#8221;: surf pioneer Ray Wilson returns to town"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WHEN surfing pioneer Ray Wilson moved from Anglesea back to his old stomping ground of Torquay recently, he brought with him an old memento of his time spent on the coast that now hangs on the wall of his room, a southern right whale skeleton.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt had died and washed up between Bells and Winkipop \u2026 I went down with a sharp rock and cut the whole thing out and carried it back to my house in Torquay and waited until the ants did a job on it. It weighs 40 kilograms \u2026 the whale itself was about 14 foot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ray is somewhat limited in how much memorabilia from his more than 60 years of ocean life he can now hold on to, given he\u2019s in an aged care home in Torquay, but those who know him will be aware of his ongoing ability to vividly illustrate the history of the region and his place in it.<\/p>\n<p>A keen member of the Torquay sailing club, Tigers football player, the first boardriders club \u201cthe Point Danger Danglers\u201d, the first official Victorian Surf Title holder (1964) and long-time resident of Torquay\u2019s esplanade, Ray is deeply enmeshed in the region.<\/p>\n<p>On the day we catch up, at the recently renamed Doc Hughes, a superb rainbow dominates the gun metal grey sky as we watch the surf roll in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow lucky are we?\u201d he said out loud to me and a passing staff member.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_71937\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-71937\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-71937\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/Pool-in-article-2022-06-15T112729.313.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/Pool-in-article-2022-06-15T112729.313.png 600w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/Pool-in-article-2022-06-15T112729.313-300x190.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-71937\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;How good is this?!&#8221; Ray surveys a rainbow from Doc Hughs.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThis\u2019ll keep blowing all night, tomorrow will be pumping at Bells\u201d, he then remarked of the storm that was whipping up a decent swell.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019d just met at his old house at 38 The Esplanade, where he grew up with his mother, that\u2019s now owned by a Melbourne woman he\u2019d needlessly introduced himself to recently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was telling her I used to live there and my name and she said \u2018yeah, I know who you are Ray\u2019,\u201d he laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNice lady, she showed me around inside and it\u2019s much the same \u2026 aside from the yuppie kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s left a chair out for me on the deck, told me I\u2019m welcome to come and sit whenever I like, water the garden.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a suitable stopping point as he makes his way around town on his new electric bike, inspecting the swell at spots like Drainos and Point Danger he\u2019d have surfed thousands of times.<\/p>\n<p>He still gets itchy feet when the waves are good, or the wind is blowing nicely for sailing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think \u2018oh well, I could go out\u2019 and then all of a sudden you go \u2018hang on a minute, how old are you?\u2019 \u2026 \u2018have a grip of reality will ya\u2019,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_71938\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-71938\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-71938\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/Pool-in-article-2022-06-15T112754.365.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/Pool-in-article-2022-06-15T112754.365.png 600w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/Pool-in-article-2022-06-15T112754.365-300x190.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-71938\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ray and his new electric bike.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Now in his mid 70s and recently healed from a hip operation, his rides around the town that\u2019s now an international surfing mecca bear little resemblance with the sleepy town he grew up in, although the water is a constant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ocean \u2026 it doesn\u2019t change much but the buildings do \u2026 the old houses are fairly rare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The other constant is his unwavering ethos to how one should approach life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never give up, there\u2019s always looking ahead, what am I going to do tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe sun\u2019s going to come up and be really good and the temperature\u2019s going to get warmer so that\u2019s okay.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAge doesn\u2019t mean anything, age is just time, that keeps going.
