{"id":72176,"date":"2022-06-23T04:00:57","date_gmt":"2022-06-22T18:00:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=72176"},"modified":"2022-06-22T20:59:42","modified_gmt":"2022-06-22T10:59:42","slug":"this-beautiful-black-cat-lorne-man-reveals-vision-of-otway-panther","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/this-beautiful-black-cat-lorne-man-reveals-vision-of-otway-panther\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;This beautiful black cat&#8221;: Lorne man reveals vision of &#8220;Otway panther&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>IN THE early hours of a Monday morning on February 28, something unusual caught the eye of Lorne\u2019s Perry Childs as he looked out from his third-floor balcony in the Cumberland Lorne Resort, towards the Great Ocean Road.<\/p>\n<p>The South African expat had just finished speaking with his family back home at 2:40am, had made himself a coffee and was looking towards the ocean when he saw movement down on the street.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I looked again it was walking on the curbside of Mountjoy Parade and it walked past the Telstra call box and past the bins and then I realised that this is big\u201d, he said holding his hands out around a metre wide in estimation of its size.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout the size of a cheetah, but bulkier\u2026 muscular and black.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LjE7qsn-QGE\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just looked at this, gobsmacked, wanting to get my mobile to take a shot of it but it was on charge and I didn\u2019t want to miss anything, but I also realised that the plaza has CCTV,\u201d so he kept watching it prowl around for the next 5-10 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt spent a bit of time in front of the garbage bins because over the weekend there\u2019s normally a bit of overflow, it might have found something there, I don\u2019t know. Photo: GREAT OCEAN PHOTOGRAPHY<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There have neen several sitings of the \u2018Otways panther\u2019 in the region over the years, including from professional local photographer Amber Noseda, who released several images of a sleek black cat like creature she encountered in the Otways hinterland in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Perry Childs said he was previously unaware of the folklore surrounding big cats in the region before he stood on his balcony and watched the animal<br \/>\nin February.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnbeknown to me the Otway panther has been in the Lorne and South coast folklore for years and it appears that it was a mascot with second world war servicemen and it was left behind or escaped, and\/or it was a circus animal, who knows.<\/p>\n<p>After years of conjecture about the existence of big cats in the state, a 2012 study commissioned by the Victorian government concluded that it\u2019s highly unlikely that they exist.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_72185\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-72185\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-72185\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/Pool-in-article-2022-06-22T120851.163.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/Pool-in-article-2022-06-22T120851.163.png 600w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/Pool-in-article-2022-06-22T120851.163-300x190.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-72185\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mr Childs watched the cat from his third floor balcony. Photo: MATT WORLAND<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is definitely not your run of the mill household cat looking for a couple of scraps, Mr Childs said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a cat, a big cat, and my firm belief is that it\u2019s a panther.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI come from Africa, I know cats and for me it\u2019s not the size of a lion, or a leopard, it\u2019s the size of a cheetah, but bulkier, it\u2019s got more muscle, but it would be the same size.
