{"id":72247,"date":"2022-06-23T04:15:01","date_gmt":"2022-06-22T18:15:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=72247"},"modified":"2022-06-23T08:59:20","modified_gmt":"2022-06-22T22:59:20","slug":"waders-embrace-the-chill-during-winter-solstice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/waders-embrace-the-chill-during-winter-solstice\/","title":{"rendered":"Waders embrace the chill during winter solstice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A BRAVE and adventurous cohort of morning ocean waders have celebrated the winter solstice in true community fashion.<\/p>\n<p>More than 30 Surf Coast residents, mainly Torquay-based, embraced the longest night of the year on Tuesday morning this week, getting waist-deep in very cold water at Fisherman\u2019s Beach at the crack of dawn.<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday Ocean Waders organiser Joanna Halley said it was a great turnout on Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWeather-wise, the past couple of weeks have been quite tough because it has gotten cold very quickly,\u201d Ms Halley said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a group, we used the solstice as a chance to really drive the message home that members could look forward to more daylight in the mornings and warmer weather.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was just an extremely positive start to the day, and it was great to have some new people joining us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 470px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/B07K7432-JoannaHall_06043.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"470\" height=\"313\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Organiser Joanna Halley (first from right) with other Ocean Waders during the Winter Solstice event.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The morning involved group singing, a conch being sounded and plenty of laughter being shared, as the beach was well-lit with lanterns and bamboo torches, creating a charming and scene with the sun rising in the background.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Halley\u2019s group started just over a year ago, after she attended a Wim Hof ice bath seminar and became a fan of cold-water therapy.<\/p>\n<p>The group\u2019s first wade in 2021 saw a few hardy souls turn up, but since then the group has grown to boast more than 400 followers on social media and has expanded the wades to six days a week.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Halley originally wanted to not only find other adventurous people willing to embrace the ocean but also to build a community group to rectify some of the social isolation induced by the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have built this really close-knit community over the past year and we\u2019re all so different,\u201d Ms Halley said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think I have been a part of any other group in my life where I have had so many people together harmoniously.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone is supportive, kind, and on the same page, it\u2019s just a really special group of people and anyone is always welcome to come along and join us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome down and get in the water!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 533px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/B07K7425-LukeHickey_22520.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"533\" height=\"355\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Luke Hickey, a wading regular, sounding the conch horn in a makeshift Viking hat at Fisherman&#8217;s Beach.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The group has expanded beyond just swimming and wading and often gathers for meals and fundraising events.<\/p>\n<p>Fundraisers have put funds towards a variety of charities focusing on homelessness, wildlife rescue and cancer.<\/p>\n<p>More information can be found on the group\u2019s Wednesday Ocean Waders Facebook page.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A BRAVE and adventurous cohort of morning ocean waders have celebrated the winter solstice in true community fashion.
