{"id":72258,"date":"2022-06-27T04:30:34","date_gmt":"2022-06-26T18:30:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=72258"},"modified":"2022-06-22T17:24:25","modified_gmt":"2022-06-22T07:24:25","slug":"sensational-salmon-the-talk-of-lorne","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/sensational-salmon-the-talk-of-lorne\/","title":{"rendered":"Sensational salmon the talk of Lorne"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AUSTRALIAN salmon are seldom found in the waters off Lorne, but the months of May and June suggest otherwise at the Lorne Aquatic and Angling Club.<\/p>\n<p>Club commodore Keith Miller said numbers of salmon such as this hadn\u2019t been seen in Lorne for almost a decade as thousands of the fish have gathered near the Surf Coast town.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve never had them here this big before, either,\u201d Mr Miller said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeveral of our members have caught some impressive Australian salmon over a number of competitions here, and I\u2019d say three times in a week at one point we\u2019ve broken the club record for the fish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A month ago, Alby Dawson set a new junior club record with a 2,061g salmon, but that was broken last week when Rita DeBon caught a 2,811g salmon.<\/p>\n<p>Rita held the record for a short time, but then Alby reclaimed it with a 2,960g salmon, which is now the incumbent junior record and heavier than the senior record holder.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 481px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/RitaDeBonsalmon_96904.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"481\" height=\"361\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rita DeBon broke the previous record with a 2,811g fish.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The record was then again broken with a catch recorded at 4,000g.<\/p>\n<p>The commodore has a theory behind the spontaneous increase in Australian salmon numbers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are feeding on a small fish called whitebait, and are busting up in large schools attacking their prey and often completely jumping out of the water by more than a metre,\u201d Mr Miller said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe whitebait are there, I believe, because they are feeding on thousands and thousands of acres of jellyfish, which is in turn attracting the salmon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve had jellyfish come by in the past, but not like this.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a wonderful sequence of events and it was made even better seeing our kids making the catches. Who knows?
