{"id":72764,"date":"2022-06-28T04:00:49","date_gmt":"2022-06-27T18:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=72764"},"modified":"2022-06-24T16:59:58","modified_gmt":"2022-06-24T06:59:58","slug":"300-years-in-lorne","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/300-years-in-lorne\/","title":{"rendered":"300 years in Lorne"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WEEKS away from his 100th birthday, long-time Lorne resident Doug Sterling mentions how he recently slowed down \u2013 in kilometre per hour terms, at least \u2013 months ago giving his car to his niece after hers was written off in an accident.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s since replaced his fuel combustion engine with an electric one in what he calls his \u201cgopher\u201d, a golf-style buggy, but still happily walks up and down the town\u2019s notoriously hilly streets with remarkable ease.<\/p>\n<p>At 99 years of age, Doug is comparatively young compared to two other long-time friends and locals, Audrey MacLeod and Geoff Jarratt, who in February and May this year each chalked up 100 years of age.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI forgot to notify the Queen,\u201d Ms MacLeod remarked.<\/p>\n<p>Her daughter Janet noted that she did receive correspondence from Derryn Hinch\u2019s Justice Party marking the occasion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll never live that down,\u201d Audrey responded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tell you with communications these days, everybody knows everything about you.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_72790\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-72790\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-72790\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/Pool-in-article-2022-06-24T165243.474.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/Pool-in-article-2022-06-24T165243.474.png 600w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/Pool-in-article-2022-06-24T165243.474-300x190.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-72790\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lifelong friends Doug Sterling and Geoff Jarratt.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Audrey would know, having served as a telephonist in World War II based in Nhill at the RAAF training base there, close to where she grew up and met her husband, Jock.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow you can just google it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Audrey celebrated her 100th birthday in February this year at her daughter\u2019s Warnambool house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had the biggest party because my nephew who has just about the biggest parties in Australia, he was 80, and I was 100, there was 106 guests,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Audrey was one of the socialites around town, Doug recalled, who first met she and her husband when they moved to town in 1984.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe and Jock liked dancing,\u201d Doug said..<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you remember that?\u201d Audrey asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the Deans Marsh Hall when Jock had his 70th birthday,\u201d Doug said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_72791\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-72791\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-72791\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/Pool-in-article-2022-06-24T165428.538.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/Pool-in-article-2022-06-24T165428.538.png 600w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/Pool-in-article-2022-06-24T165428.538-300x190.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-72791\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Doug Sterling at Lorne Point.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI couldn\u2019t dance\u2026 but they could.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Audrey still lives alone in the Erskine Falls Road home her husband built in three months in 1984. Janet only recently moved in permanently next door to the house also built around the time by<br \/>\nher father.<\/p>\n<p>While sharing more than 40 years of friendship, Audrey is a relative newcomer to town compared with Doug and his lifelong friend Geoff, who\u2019ve lived most of their lives there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve known each other since we were rolling around as babies,\u201d Doug later recalled when visiting Geoff at his aged care home in Lorne.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you have beer any more?\u201d Doug asked Geoff.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have a bottle of cider every night\u2026 I lost the taste for beer.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WEEKS away from his 100th birthday, long-time Lorne resident Doug Sterling mentions how he recently slowed down \u2013 in kilometre per hour terms, at least \u2013 months ago giving his car to his niece after hers was written off in an accident.
