{"id":73043,"date":"2022-07-02T04:00:54","date_gmt":"2022-07-01T18:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=73043"},"modified":"2022-06-30T11:43:00","modified_gmt":"2022-06-30T01:43:00","slug":"alistair-clarkson-torquay-tigers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/alistair-clarkson-torquay-tigers\/","title":{"rendered":"Alistair Clarkson talks footy at Tigers function"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE most intriguing ex-AFL coach going around had a captive audience at this year\u2019s Torquay Tigers Before the Bounce function.<\/p>\n<p>Former Hawthorn coach Alistair Clarkson was the main attraction at the event, which drew just on 200 people to the Spring Creek Reserve clubrooms on Saturday ahead of Torquay\u2019s clash with Ocean Grove.<\/p>\n<p>In conversation with Torquay committee member Tim Carson, Clarkson spoke for more than 90 minutes on a range of topics, including his ties to Geelong \u2013 his mother was originally from Geelong and is now in a nursing home here, and he regularly fished off the Point Lonsdale pier as a youth \u2013 growing up in the far western Victorian town of Kaniva, his brief VFL career with North Melbourne and Melbourne and his much longer AFL coaching career, notably the 15 years he spent in charge at the Hawks and the four premierships they won.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_73046\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-73046\" style=\"width: 811px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-73046 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/B07K7619-AlastairCl_09991.jpg?_t=1656394980\" alt=\"\" width=\"811\" height=\"540\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-73046\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Clarkson was interviewed at the Before the Bounce event by Tim Carson.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Clarkson left Hawthorn in messy circumstances at the end of the 2021 season and has spent the past six months doing what he called \u201cfront office\u201d work in governance and administration in the AFL, including around the proposed Tasmanian team.<\/p>\n<p>He said his focus now was to improve pathways for young football talent in rural areas, as times had changed considerably since he went through the VFL system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a 10-year period, from 1977 to 1987, four players came out of Kaniva [himself, Roger Merrett, Glenn Hawker and John Barnes] \u2013 and this is my passion for getting involved in Tasmania \u2013 but since 1987, the amount of players that have gone on to play in one game of AFL footy from Kaniva is zero.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd from Nhill, which is the neighbouring town where my wife is from, that produced Dean Wallace and David Cloke and Jason McCartney in the last 35 years? Zero.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe next town, Dimboola, which produced Tim Watson and Merv Neagle? Zero.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese really remote areas right around Australia aren\u2019t getting serviced like they used to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clarkson said he was yet to make a decision about coaching AFL in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not walking over hot coals to just jump into a job.
