{"id":73110,"date":"2022-07-01T04:15:06","date_gmt":"2022-06-30T18:15:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=73110"},"modified":"2022-06-29T14:33:31","modified_gmt":"2022-06-29T04:33:31","slug":"call-for-resort-to-get-on-the-ball","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/call-for-resort-to-get-on-the-ball\/","title":{"rendered":"Call for resort to get on the ball"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>IN LESS than a year, Jan Juc\u2019s Jeff Giddins has retrieved 5,572 golf balls from Spring Creek, with a combined weight of more than 250 kilograms.<\/p>\n<p>He mainly collects them along the creek\u2019s border with the RACV Torquay Resort golf course, although he\u2019s found them as far down as the surf club.<\/p>\n<p>His record is 144 in one outing, but he could easily gather more, given he\u2019s usually raking them in from the shallow flats beside the creek\u2019s bank rather than wading into the deeper water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s only the tip of the iceberg,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResort management was made aware that there was a problem just before Christmas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since February, the resort has implemented a range of mitigation strategies to address the amount of golf balls affecting the local area including Spring Creek, RACV Torquay Resort manager Dean Newell said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_73117\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-73117\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-73117\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/Pool-in-article-2022-06-29T142319.607.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/Pool-in-article-2022-06-29T142319.607.png 600w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/Pool-in-article-2022-06-29T142319.607-300x190.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-73117\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jeff Giddins in the &#8220;danger zone&#8221; where he&#8217;s retrieved thousands of balls.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Additional signage asking golfers not to intentionally hit balls towards the creek have been installed, low-flight practice balls are being offered and a fairway planting project is planned for<br \/>\nlate July.<\/p>\n<p>The vegetation plan includes native plants along the water\u2019s edge to assist in capturing rolling or low-flying balls by creating a barrier along the<br \/>\nwater\u2019s edge.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Newell said the resort was working with relevant management authorities to update them on what mitigation actions are occurring and other pollution reduction measures are in place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny golf balls collected by the resort or handed in are repurposed for reuse at the golf course and Torquay golf club junior development program, or sent for recycling,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Giddins said he\u2019s personally returned more than 2,000 balls to the resort, and the resort\u2019s decision to sign up to the recycling program came after he suggested it.<\/p>\n<p>The Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority (GORCAPA) has been aware of the problem for months and is working with the resort to reduce its pollution of the creek.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike all plastics, golf balls can affect the health of waterways, especially in high numbers, which is why we\u2019re offering all the support and advice we can to help the club address the issue,\u201d GORCAPA chief executive officer Jodie Sizer said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_73118\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-73118\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-73118\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/Pool-in-article-2022-06-29T142350.010.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/Pool-in-article-2022-06-29T142350.010.png 600w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/Pool-in-article-2022-06-29T142350.010-300x190.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-73118\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The total weight of balls retrieved is over 250 kilograms.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe golf course has been operating for several decades, which means that many balls have accumulated in Spring Creek over this period.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Environment Protection Authority\u2019s Carolyn Francis said the issue was first reported to it in November 2021.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEPA provided compliance advice to RACV, to ensure the organisation understands its responsibilities under the Environment Protection Act,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>As well a pollution issue, it\u2019s also dangerous work. Mr Giddins described near-misses in the \u201cdanger zone\u201d off the edge of the 1st and practice holes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDanger is ever present from the golf balls flying over from the opposite side and into the creek.
