{"id":73127,"date":"2022-07-01T04:30:00","date_gmt":"2022-06-30T18:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=73127"},"modified":"2022-07-01T04:30:00","modified_gmt":"2022-06-30T18:30:00","slug":"goannas-return-to-torquay-junior-chargers-benefit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/sport\/goannas-return-to-torquay-junior-chargers-benefit\/","title":{"rendered":"Goannas return to Torquay, junior Chargers benefit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SURF COAST basketballers were given a treat on Saturday afternoon, learning some new skills from Australia\u2019s best deaf basketballers.<\/p>\n<p>Australian Goannas head coach and Torquay resident Brent Reid said a mix of good timing and a relaxed environment led to his side\u2019s trip to Wurdi Baierr Stadium for a two-day training camp.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reason why we decided to come down here to the Surf Coast was actually because of a camp we had done just over a year ago and the guys absolutely loved it,\u201d Reid said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe players also loved the fact that it is a real camaraderie building weekend and going to restaurants and just being a team together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSurfcoast Basketball Association (SBA) has been super supportive of the Goannas, and we actually have three of our players in Surfcoast\u2019s Big V side.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 621px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/06\/B07K7727-ChristianG_22466.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"621\" height=\"414\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Left to right: Christian Gardiakos, Brent Reid and Xavier Scott at Wurdi Baierr Stadium.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Goannas conducted two days of training and also held a clinic for 45 of the SBA\u2019s junior Chargers players before to last Saturday\u2019s Big V games.<\/p>\n<p>High amounts of engagement from the junior players astounded Reid and gave him an insight into how much the game has grown across the region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo see the growth in basketball down here in Torquay and on the Surf Coast has been unbelievable over the last couple of years,\u201d Reid said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe event itself was only announced about a week before Saturday, so the response to basketball down here is amazing and seeing the interaction between our guys and the kids is always awesome.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m big on making sure my guys are about giving back to the game and the SBA has been so supportive of us, it gave us a chance to give back a bit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_54929\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-54929\" style=\"width: 665px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-54929\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/06\/B07K7719-Brent-Reid-centre-Goannas-Australian-Team-Deaf-Basketball-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"665\" height=\"443\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-54929\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Goannas head coach Brent Reid (centre) alongside his players.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Next year\u2019s DIBF Basketball World Championships will run from June 13-24 in Heraklion, Greece.<\/p>\n<p>Reid said the national side was motivated to strive for success after being denied a ticket to last year\u2019s Deaflympics due to COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>He also said the Goannas would aim to host two training camps a year in Torquay moving forward.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SURF COAST basketballers were given a treat on Saturday afternoon, learning some new skills from Australia\u2019s best deaf basketballers.
