{"id":73182,"date":"2022-06-30T18:37:49","date_gmt":"2022-06-30T08:37:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=73182"},"modified":"2022-06-30T21:03:32","modified_gmt":"2022-06-30T11:03:32","slug":"skinner-in-the-game-cats-recruit-ready-to-make-impact","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/skinner-in-the-game-cats-recruit-ready-to-make-impact\/","title":{"rendered":"Skinner in the game: Cats recruit ready to make impact"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">THE second draft night was a lot more stressful than the first, according to one of the Geelong Cats\u2019 latest AFLW recruits.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Former Geelong Falcons and Torquay Tigers player Mia Skinner was picked up, again, during yesterday\u2019s (Wednesday, June 29) AFLW draft at pick 33 and she\u2019s happy to be home.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QVvlzzMjK6U\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was way more nervous this time, a lot more nervous!\u201d Skinner said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was shaking, my heart was going, and I was so nervous, but I was stoked to be picked up again.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGeelong is home for me and having a second chance is one of the best things ever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 21-year-old, originally drafted by Geelong in 2019 at pick 65, was sidelined for a large portion of a two-year stint, namely due to a stress fracture on her femur.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She paved her way through hard work in the VFLW ranks, making a name for herself among the team\u2019s forwards and was rewarded Wednesday night with the Cats\u2019 first pick.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North Melbourne, Richmond and Melbourne were all reportedly interested in Skinner\u2019s game style for season 7 ahead of the draft.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_73184\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-73184\" style=\"width: 537px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-73184\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/IMG_3448-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"537\" height=\"358\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/IMG_3448-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/IMG_3448-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/IMG_3448-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/IMG_3448-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/IMG_3448-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/IMG_3448-272x182.jpg 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 537px) 100vw, 537px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-73184\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mia Skinner (left) alongside fellow draftee Brooke Plummer.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skinner said having more experience this time around would only benefit her chances of a Round 1 selection.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis time I\u2019m definitely more ready for the opportunity, hopefully I can go straight into the team this year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ve played against women before, and I definitely feel like I can come in and make an impact straight away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skinner is no stranger to the Geelong and Surf Coast regions, growing up a Torquay product and calling the town home.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI played with Torquay up until Under 18s before heading to the Geelong Falcons,\u201d Skinner said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere\u2019s a few girls I played with out at Torquay who I am really good friends, and were also with me on draft night.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cChris Burgess, who was a development coach for me at the VFLW level, also coached me at Torquay, so there\u2019s been a few people who have been by my side.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geelong also selected Brooke Plummer from the Northern Knights and Abbey McDonald from the Calder Cannons at picks 42 and 55 respectively.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE second draft night was a lot more stressful than the first, according to one of the Geelong Cats\u2019 latest AFLW recruits.
