	{"id":73484,"date":"2022-07-08T04:00:32","date_gmt":"2022-07-07T18:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=73484"},"modified":"2022-07-09T09:09:30","modified_gmt":"2022-07-08T23:09:30","slug":"reflections-on-childhood","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/living\/reflections-on-childhood\/","title":{"rendered":"Reflections on childhood"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was 12 when young classically trained Australian pop singer Kate Miller-Heidke released her first-person account on childhood bullying that struck a chord across Australia, Caught in the Crowd.<\/p>\n<p>Miller-Heidke is down-to-earth, honest and has a humility that you might not expect from someone who\u2019s represented Australia in Eurovision, topped the pop music charts and written musicals.<\/p>\n<p>I remember hearing the song for the first time, close to tears, on a bus ride home from school. It\u2019s the story of a young boy James, left alone by the story\u2019s singer when he most needed a friend: \u201cIf I could go back do it again, I\u2019d be someone you could call friend. Please, please, please believe that I\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More than a decade later, the song is still an anti-bullying anthem and has even been used by the federal government\u2019s \u201cBullying: no way!\u201d anti-bullying curriculum.<\/p>\n<p>Miller-Heidke\u2019s technically brilliant vocals and clever melodies are simply dimensions of soul-piercing stories.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-73517 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/weirdly-sized-image-17-600x380.png?_t=1657080110\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/weirdly-sized-image-17.png 600w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/weirdly-sized-image-17-300x190.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>She is as much storyteller as she is singer, and now, more than a decade later, she is again reflecting on childhood on her latest album Child in Reverse, but this time as a mother, with a perspective and wisdom only time and perhaps parenthood can bring.<\/p>\n<p>Child in Reverse is shaped by her own experience of childhood and life growing up in Southern Queensland.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s all about childhood, it\u2019s about unlearning. Unlearning old habits that sometimes stretch a long way back, trying to rewrite those old neuropathways,\u201d Miller-Heidke said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a fundamental influence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it was just percolating in my brain after having my own child.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s probably the sad experience of a lot of parents \u2013 you have a kid and suddenly memories of your own childhood descend. You sort of can\u2019t help comparing how you experienced childhood with the life you\u2019re giving your own kids.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo that\u2019s why that was weighing on my mind at that point when all these songs came out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDear five-year-old me \/ I wish I could reach back in time \/ And tell you it\u2019s alright \/ You\u2019re gonna be just fine \/ I wish I could help you to see\u201d Miller-Heidke sings in chorus of one of the album\u2019s songs Twelve Year Old Me.<\/p>\n<p>The album is filled with life stories and songs that speak to childhood, with You Can\u2019t Hurt Me Anymore featuring Jaguar Jonze being particularly significant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had been talking with Jaguar Jonze about the abuse she suffered during her childhood. I started to think about an experience I had during my own childhood and jotted down the title \u2018You Can\u2019t Hurt Me Anymore\u2019,\u201d Miller-Heidke said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe described some very shocking things that happened to her as a child, and I felt very connected to her, and full of admiration for her resilience too \u2013 that\u2019s when the song title You Can\u2019t Hurt Me Anymore popped into my head.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_73512\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-73512\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-73512 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/weirdly-sized-image-13-600x380.png?_t=1657079636\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/weirdly-sized-image-13.png 600w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/weirdly-sized-image-13-300x190.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-73512\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;I cried a bit. I had never written directly<br \/>about this before, and it was cathartic.&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Miller-Heidke said the song and production came together quickly and everyone in the room felt the song\u2019s significance immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat day Tobias Kuhn brought in that circular minor synth hook that explodes into the beautiful release of a major one. It immediately worked for the title. We had an amazing day that day \u2013 everyone was so excited by the epic pre-chorus, possibly the best pre-chorus I\u2019ve ever been involved in writing. I cried a bit. I had never written directly about this before, and it was cathartic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s one of the most powerful songs I\u2019ve written, and it\u2019s a privilege to sing it with Jaguar Jonze, who transformed the track with her potent raw energy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At each show on the Child in Reverse tour, Miller-Heidke is planning to invite a child up on stage to sing Caught in the Crowd with her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just something that\u2019s started quite spontaneously. It\u2019s sort of amazing how you know songs in live performance are almost like living organisms and they always change. For this tour I\u2019m extra excited to play the new stuff. Nervous and excited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou never quite know what a song\u2019s going to become when you put it in front of a live audience. There\u2019s no way to rehearse that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Miller-Heidke said being back on stage is something she doesn\u2019t take for granted after spending 2020 in Melbourne lockdowns, having many shows cancelled and a tour delayed in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpeaking from the perspective of an audience member, I don\u2019t think I really appreciated until the pandemic how much I relied on live performance and seeing live art for my mental health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve come to realize now It\u2019s my equivalent of church, you know human beings are animals and we need that, we need to feel that connection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot just with whoever\u2019s on stage but with members of the audience. I\u2019ve been to see quite a few things in the past few months, and it really feels like a catharsis for people.
