{"id":73580,"date":"2022-07-08T13:18:55","date_gmt":"2022-07-08T03:18:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/supercats-to-celebrate-first-nations-people\/"},"modified":"2022-07-08T13:18:55","modified_gmt":"2022-07-08T03:18:55","slug":"supercats-to-celebrate-first-nations-people","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/sport\/supercats-to-celebrate-first-nations-people\/","title":{"rendered":"Supercats to celebrate First Nations people"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geelong Supercats will celebrate and acknowledge the accomplishments of First Nations people while facing the Waverley Falcons at Geelong Area tomorrow night.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geelong\u2019s NBL1 men and women will don a new First Nations jersey designed by proud Wemba Wemba man and Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-Operative board member David Flagg to coincide with the NBL1\u2019s nationwide First Nations Round and NAIDOC Week.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNAIDOC Week is a week where we can acknowledge the history and culture of all First Nations people,\u201d Geelong United Basketball CEO Mark Neeld said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are especially grateful for David\u2019s design and the role it will play in celebrating First Nations people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe club is also excited to announce that the uniform worn during this season\u2019s NBL1 First Nations round on Saturday will also become the permanent uniform for all senior pathways teams in 2023.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-52609 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2022\/07\/Supercats-Indigenous-Post-2-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"322\" height=\"322\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geelong joins fellow NBL1 South clubs Casey, Ballarat, Knox, Bendigo, Mt Gambier, Eltham, and Ringwood in producing specially made First Nations uniforms.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-52611 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2022\/07\/Supercats-Indigenous-Post-3-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a massive pat on the back to Geelong United and the Supercats that they want to embrace our culture and our community along with us,\u201d Wathaurong Co-Op CEO Simon Flagg said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor us it\u2019s very exciting and it makes us very proud to see Aboriginal designs on the Supercats uniforms.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt shows there are organisations that want to work and partner up with Aboriginal people like ourselves, it isn\u2019t just a piece of paper or putting a flag up, it\u2019s a genuine commitment to make our culture a part of theirs and I just think it\u2019s awesome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_52610\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52610\" style=\"width: 456px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-52610\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2022\/07\/IMG_3569-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"456\" height=\"304\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-52610\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The new uniforms will be worn against Waverley tomorrow night.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tomorrow night\u2019s clashes with the Falcons is approaching a sell-out crowd and will also celebrate the 300-game and 100-game milestones of Alex Duck and Sara Blicavs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tip-off for the women is at 5pm and the men at 7pm.
