The ball spilled from the pack right into the hands of Jones, who went on to kick the contest\u2019s first major, sending the spectators into a frenzy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 611px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/07\/061A5235-2_55059.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"611\" height=\"407\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The moment Jones kicked his first of two goals.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Grubbers quickly regained the lead and ran away with the contest in the end, but Portarlington fought gallantly, kicking eight more goals to accumulate its third-highest score of the season, with Jones kicking his second goal in the later stages of the game.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 561px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/07\/2H3A3824_46123.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"561\" height=\"374\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Some colourful outfits made their way to Portarlington Recreation Reserve.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ocean Grove were 74-point winners on the day (60-134), but Portarlington president Steve Cogger said it was a tremendous day as a whole, despite the loss.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was an excellent event for the community, everybody was involved from the cricket club to the Lions Club; it was just a tremendous community effort to pull off today,\u201d Cogger said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt had started off as a footy game, but it became bigger than that. We\u2019ve put ourselves on the map a bit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlready in the short-term having Nathan here has provided benefits, the community and our membership base has really gotten behind us, which has seen our supporters and sponsors grown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur junior base is growing, and Nathan could have only improved that and we\u2019re so grateful for that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 586px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/07\/2H3A3810_29512.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"586\" height=\"391\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">More than a thousand spectators watched on as Portarlington faced Ocean Grove.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Jones was one of eight former AFL players to be selected to a local football club in the Carlton Draft two and a half months ago, hoping to bring together Victorian communities and encourage them to support local football coming out of the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 557px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/07\/2H3A3841_22535.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"557\" height=\"371\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Musician Mike Brady provided pre-match entertainment.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Jones said the reception he received from Portarlington was incredible and hoped he could help get the club out of some challenging times moving forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been a tough couple of years for community footy in particular with the whole COVID situation, so to reinvigorate some of that excitement among the local community is huge for me.
