SURF COAST Shire Council will add a potential athletics track to its list of considerations for a long-term infrastructure framework following a community call for dedicated facilities.<\/p>\n

But the fledgling Surf Coast Little Athletics club must demonstrate ongoing interest and growth potential to realise its dream.<\/p>\n

Council officers will consider a purpose-built athletics centre for Torquay in its Social Infrastructure Plan following a vote at last week’s meeting.<\/p>\n

A council report flagged the Messmate Road Growth Area in Torquay’s north as a potential future home.<\/p>\n

The shire has also committed to helping the club make best use of short to medium-term options at current home Torquay College, Quay Reserve or Connewarre Reserve, through a potential partnership with the City of Greater Geelong.<\/p>\n

SCLA signed up just over 100 participants<\/a> in its first year to run, jump and throw in a successful debut season last summer.<\/p>\n

Its popularity prompted a 192-signature petition to the council<\/a> earlier this year to establish a permanent home in Torquay.<\/p>\n

The idea had support from councillors, who praised the club for its early success and wider benefit to residents, which aligned with the council’s active community principles.<\/p>\n

“We’re grateful for this petition, it’s a great organisation with great support and lots of members. It does a lot of good work for our community,” Cr Pattison said at the July meeting.<\/p>\n

The council report indicated the club must “demonstrate continued growth over time before a long-term facility would be considered a priority”.<\/p>\n
