{"id":76247,"date":"2022-08-19T04:00:04","date_gmt":"2022-08-18T18:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=76247"},"modified":"2022-08-17T13:34:18","modified_gmt":"2022-08-17T03:34:18","slug":"suns-setting-new-standard-of-inclusion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/suns-setting-new-standard-of-inclusion\/","title":{"rendered":"Suns setting new standard of inclusion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE SURF Coast Suns&#8217; All-Abilities netball team is fresh off the final game of its first season and club representatives are saying 2023 can&#8217;t come soon enough.<\/p>\n<p>Surf Coast Suns president Mike Thomas said it was a massive achievement for the Suns to build a full squad of 10 for 2022, after it could only gather five players in 2021, forcing them to merge with Geelong West.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Their enthusiasm has been so infectious this season, it has been remarkable,&#8221; Mr Thomas said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You can see it in some of the photos we take, and I witness it first-hand when I check in on the team, it&#8217;s awesome to see.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We haven&#8217;t just put a name to the team, we have made sure that the players are members of the club, and this is something that we will continue to grow.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 504px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/B07K8081-SurfCoastS_44180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"504\" height=\"336\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The players play competitive netball at Kardinia Park every week against other local clubs.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Four teams are currently in Geelong&#8217;s All-Abilities netball league featuring Surf Coast Suns, Lara, St Joseph&#8217;s and Geelong West, but more clubs are being encouraged to create teams of their own.<\/p>\n<p>Each week teams compete in matches at Kardinia Park&#8217;s netball complex and at this stage only runs during the winter season, but Mr Thomas said there are talks to run a season over the summer period.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;From our perspective, inclusion has always been the main driver for this team,&#8221; Mr Thomas said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Everybody deserves to play sport and the greatest thing about sport is that regardless of what level you can play, there is always a competition for you.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Leisure Networks ensured that we were able to recruit a few members in our community on the Surf Coast and it has really grown our club as a result, not just in netball but as a whole too.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 548px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/B07K8367-SurfCoastS_01866.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"548\" height=\"365\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The players play competitive netball at Kardinia Park every week against other local clubs.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Isela Bridges was credited by the club as being the person responsible for setting up the team.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This team doesn&#8217;t happen without Isela, she works in the all-abilities area, so she has experience in this kind of thing, she just took the team with both hands and ran with it,&#8221; Mr Thomas added.<\/p>\n<p>The All-Abilities league is facilitated by AFL Barwon, Netball Victoria and disability service provider Leisure Networks.<\/p>\n<p>Interested parties in joining All-Abilities netball at the Suns are encouraged to head to the club&#8217;s website at www.surfcoastsuns.com or contact the club directly.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BY VINNIE VAN OORSCHOTTHE SURF Coast Suns\u2019 All- [&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"btn btn-secondary understrap-read-more-link\" href=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/suns-setting-new-standard-of-inclusion\/\">Read More&#8230;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":191,"featured_media":76256,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"inline_featured_image":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[7],"tags":[],"post_folder":[],"class_list":["post-76247","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.7 -
