{"id":79263,"date":"2022-09-15T04:00:01","date_gmt":"2022-09-14T18:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=79263"},"modified":"2022-09-14T09:00:35","modified_gmt":"2022-09-13T23:00:35","slug":"span-walk-remembers-lost-loved-ones-at-in-person-return","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/span-walk-remembers-lost-loved-ones-at-in-person-return\/","title":{"rendered":"SPAN Walk remembers lost loved ones at in-person return"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>GEELONG and district residents gathered at Johnstone Park as for the first time in three years to take part in Geelong&#8217;s SPAN Suicide Awareness Walk.<\/p>\n<p>Ran virtually the past two years due to COVID-19, organisers from Hope Bereavement Care and Suicide Prevention Awareness Network (SPAN) were grateful to host an in-person event in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>SPAN committee member and chairperson Ben LeFevre said originally the walk was held to raise awareness for suicide a decade ago, but has learnt it has become much more over the years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For each person affected by suicide this day acts as a memorial for them, it&#8217;s a day of connecting and finding a safe space where we can all talk about our loved ones who have died by suicide,&#8221; Mr LeFevre said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 485px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/09\/IMG_6415_78341.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"485\" height=\"324\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ben LeFevre conducting a speech during proceedings.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mr LeFevre knows first-hand the impact of losing a loved one to suicide, losing his cousin to suicide in 2008 and close friends a year later in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>Following the tragic events, Mr LeFevre was motivated to do research into depression and took part in his first SPAN walk.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 607px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/09\/IMG_6439_16169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"607\" height=\"405\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dogs were in attendance on the day playing their own role in allowing people to remember loved ones.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>LeFevre joined SPAN&#8217;s committee after his first walk and has been a major local advocate for suicide prevention ever since.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of residents from around the region attended Sunday&#8217;s walk, where names of lost loved ones were read out, before family members gathered in a circular formation beside City Hall to remember their loved ones.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 514px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/09\/IMG_6351_64601.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"514\" height=\"343\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Organisers of Sunday&#8217;s SPAN Suicide Awareness Walk beside City Hall.
