IN LATE 2016, secondary school singing teacher Erika Tuner approached the Spring Creek Community House in search of a choir.<\/p>\n
This search led to her forming the Surfside Singers, a group of about 30 members who love singing together on a Tuesday night each week.<\/p>\n
\u201cI moved from Melbourne to Torquay and ended up forming the group in term four at the community house,\u201d Erika said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI had around 20 people involved by the end who all wanted to continue and so now we sing for an hour and a half every week.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe sing a range of songs including pop music, jazz, folk; I\u2019m really open to anything.<\/p>\n
\u201cI divide the group in altos, baritones and sopranos, creating harmonies with a variety of songs, which works really well.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Surfside Singers often performs for the elderly and last Christmas organised a flash mob at the beach.<\/p>\n
\u201cSinging with the Surfside Singers is definitely a highlight of my week,\u201d Erika said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I\u2019m not singing with the group, I\u2019m either working at one of the secondary schools in Geelong or working in my studio. I have a background in musical theatre too.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Surfside Singers is a welcoming group and encourages anyone to join them on a Tuesday night from 5.30pm to 7pm.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou don\u2019t need singing experience to join us. It\u2019s just a lot of fun and we have a wide range of ages in the group too,\u201d Erika said.<\/p>\n
Sessions cost $10.<\/p>\n
