{"id":80763,"date":"2022-09-29T04:00:22","date_gmt":"2022-09-28T18:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=80763"},"modified":"2022-09-30T12:46:45","modified_gmt":"2022-09-30T02:46:45","slug":"teen-skate-entrepreneur-on-the-grind","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/teen-skate-entrepreneur-on-the-grind\/","title":{"rendered":"Teen skate entrepreneur on the grind"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TORQUAY local River Lawson is one of several up-and-coming young skateboarders in the region gaining a name in the sport, but unlike many of his peers, the teenager also runs a skate company.<\/p>\n<p>Registered as a business in July 2021 &#8211; a month after his 11th birthday &#8211; the Bomb Skate Company now has five team riders sporting an expanding product range of hoodies, tees, caps, socks and grip tape.<\/p>\n<p>Like skateboarding, River says he&#8217;s &#8220;learnt it&#8217;s very difficult and you just need to work hard&#8221; to be successful in running a business, but he has got big ambitions for both pursuits.<\/p>\n<p>He will soon travel to Mackay in Queensland for his first interstate competition, where he will enter the 12 and Under Etnies AM Series for street skating, a direct pathway to the Rumble Tour; Australia&#8217;s premier skateboard league.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_80911\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-80911\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-80911\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/09\/In-Article-30.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/09\/In-Article-30.png 600w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/09\/In-Article-30-300x190.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-80911\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">12-year-old River Lawson has just marked one year in business with Bomb Skate Co.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While he wants to do well in the competition, it will also be an opportunity to get his brand out to a wider audience and a step closer to his ambition of &#8220;being as big as Nike and Adidas&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the Bomb Skate Co riders, aged between 8-12, are already placing well in competitions around the state, helped in part by the support of being in a team.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The brand makes them all feel they&#8217;re on the same team, with their hoodies, tee shirts, grip tape,&#8221; River&#8217;s father Alistair Lawson, who takes turns with other parents driving the skaters to various parks and competitions throughout Victoria, said.<\/p>\n<p>Addis O&#8217;Loughlin is fast earning a reputation as someone to watch.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_80955\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-80955\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-80955\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/09\/In-Article-28.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/09\/In-Article-28.png 600w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/09\/In-Article-28-300x190.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-80955\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">River knocks out a front krook in Torquay.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At the age of 10, he is already getting large airs out of the monster concrete bowl in Torquay North.<\/p>\n<p>Josh Coughlin is similarly shredding &#8211; the 11-year-old is skating bowls and ramps with the confidence of riders many years his senior and is earning top three placings in competitions as a result.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re trying to have fun and get our names out there\u2026 it&#8217;s so much better,&#8221; River said of riding with his mates in their matching Bomb gear.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ll try to stick with it for as long as I can.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TORQUAY local River Lawson is one of several up-and-coming young skateboarders in the region gaining a name in the sport, but unlike many of his peers, the teenager also runs a skate company.
