TORQUAY Surf Lifesaving Club’s (SLSC) Sophie Thomas is being hailed as a “good chance” to take out tomorrow’s (Saturday, November 5) Surf<\/p>\n
Lifesaving Australia’s Surf Sport Athlete of the Year.<\/p>\n
Torquay SLSC competitions director Peter Quinlan is adamant Thomas is Victoria’s best chance at securing the award in years following a superb season at the state and national level.<\/p>\n
“She’s just an outstanding person, both on the beach and off it,” Quinlan said.<\/p>\n
“She’s been in the sport as a Nipper chasing her dream of becoming an elite athlete, and in the same time helping others, whether that be coaching, mentoring, or teaching. That’s what sets her apart, her care and love for others.”<\/p>\n
Thomas enjoyed an impressive summer season, making three Open finals at the Australian Champs earlier in the year and was named ‘Athlete of the Meet’ at the Victorian Championships as well for her results in the water.<\/p>\n
The state event involved five gold medals, three silver medals and two bronze in water disciplines.<\/p>\n
Closer to home, Thomas gained hometown bragging rights by winning the Jim Wall Ironwoman at Torquay SLSC.<\/p>\n
Thomas remains an active patrolling member and supports the development of athletes across two clubs.<\/p>\n
She competes and mentors at her childhood club, Torquay, while living in western Victoria, where she continues coaching the Warrnambool Youth Team three times a week during summer.<\/p>\n
“I’m really confident she may get the nod in 2022, she’s a tireless worker,” Quinlan added.<\/p>\n
“I’ve never known Sophie to give up, she’ll do anything or try anything to win medals at states and Aussies.<\/p>\n
“An example that springs to mind involves Sophie running and training with weights on her ankles to give her that extra edge on the sand given her shorter stature; it paid off and she made several Open finals at nationals.”<\/p>\n
Thomas will be Victoria’s only candidate for Athlete of the Year in a field of seven.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
