{"id":85017,"date":"2022-11-21T04:00:26","date_gmt":"2022-11-20T17:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=85017"},"modified":"2022-11-17T09:12:39","modified_gmt":"2022-11-16T22:12:39","slug":"the-sands-charity-day-tees-off-for-breast-cancer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/the-sands-charity-day-tees-off-for-breast-cancer\/","title":{"rendered":"The Sands charity day tees off for breast cancer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ALMOST 100 women awash in pink clothing and a common goal teed off against cancer last week at The Sands Torquay for breast cancer research and program fundraising.<\/p>\n<p>Co-ordinated by The Sands Torquay&#8217;s women&#8217;s golf committee, club captain Linda Turner revealed The Sands Breast Cancer Charity Day raised upwards of $6,000 a tremendous result for the event&#8217;s return in three years.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 521px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/IMG_7712_36849.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"521\" height=\"347\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Following play, all women enjoyed a presentation lunch.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve had to, of course, cancel our last two years of this important event, so it was great to see everyone come back and really support it,&#8221; Ms Turner said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s great we got a full field of play, it really showed that people are willing to get back out there and contribute to causes like this.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>All proceeds from entry fees, raffle tickets and individual donations, will be donated to research foundation Breast Cancer Trials (BCT); a group of world-leading breast cancer doctors and researchers based in Australia and New Zealand committed to exploring and finding better treatments for people affected by breast cancer.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 504px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/IMG_7717_36826.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"504\" height=\"336\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Liz Georgeson and raffle volunteer Rae Rayner.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Since BCT&#8217;s Tee Off program began in 1996, golf clubs and their members across Australia have raised over $2.82 million to date.<\/p>\n<p>The Sands&#8217; event alone has raised more than $41,100 since 2014.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 563px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/IMG_7732_36932.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"563\" height=\"375\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">More than $6,000 was raised on the day.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;This event is proof that cancer touches everybody,&#8221; Ms Turner added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Whether it&#8217;s a grandmother, mother, wife, partner, friend, I think everybody knows someone that is affected by breast cancer and that&#8217;s a driving force for the day each year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re always trying to finetune the charity day from year-to-year, but it wouldn&#8217;t be possible without the hard-working course management team.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 584px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/IMG_7747_36881.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"389\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Glasses were raised in honour of Sue Booth, who tragically passed away of breast cancer just before play commenced. Ms Booth was slated to take part in the charity day.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Results on the day included winners Vicki Trethowan and Faye Hay (51 points), runners-up Nicki Quinlan and Sally Locke (50 points) and third-place finishers Deborah Irving and Catherine Lane (50 points).<\/p>\n<p>In solidarity with the charity day, The Sands is offering women a five-day membership (Monday to Friday) running until June 30.<\/p>\n<p>The membership has also been discounted from $833 to $600 with $100 going towards BCT. This offer is only available until the end of November.
