{"id":85578,"date":"2022-11-29T04:00:19","date_gmt":"2022-11-28T17:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=85578"},"modified":"2022-11-24T12:31:39","modified_gmt":"2022-11-24T01:31:39","slug":"rainbow-in-the-rain-afterglow-lights-up-surf-coast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/rainbow-in-the-rain-afterglow-lights-up-surf-coast\/","title":{"rendered":"Rainbow in the rain: Afterglow lights up Surf Coast"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>EARLY concerns regarding participant numbers due to poor weather conditions were quickly quelled when hundreds of runners turned out for the 2022 Afterglow Night Trail Run event.<\/p>\n<p>Event organiser and Tour De Trails director Chris Ord was astounded by the congregation of 550 trail-runners that undertook the five-kilometre, 13-kilometre and 21-kilometre runs, while battling an inundation of rain from Point Addis to Torquay.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 333px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/DSC6366_26691.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"333\" height=\"416\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brett Davis (1:36:33) and James Brayshaw (1:40:39).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;Trail-runners are a different breed, I&#8217;m telling you,&#8221; Mr Ord said post-event.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Everyone there all seemed to love it and that&#8217;s not me trying to PR the thing, because I had to deal with a few things on the course expecting a few negative responses as a result, but they just loved it, frothed it even.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 234px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/DSC5805_09939.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"234\" height=\"351\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Runners gather in Point Addis carpark prior to undertaking the 21km run.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;All the way down to my 12-year-old daughter, who managed to finish the 13-kilometre run. It was a great night overall.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Ord thanked his team of volunteers who braved the weather conditions, donning unicorn dresses and motivating runners across the courses&#8217; marshalling points\/first aid stations.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/DSC2861_78666.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"325\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">David Riccardi finished with a time of 1:53:13.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;Coming off the back of COVID, everyone has had a couple years away from the event. But to see people come together and shed off a little bit of the memory from the pandemic, is really something you can&#8217;t really complain about,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Geelong local and Surf Coast Trail Marathon winner Nicole Virant took home the main women&#8217;s 21-kilometre race in impressive fashion with a time of 1:41:57, a minute and a half faster than runner-up Jo Noesgaard who concluded the run with a time of 1:43:23.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 264px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/DSC6082_29974.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"264\" height=\"396\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fergus Wilson enduring some less-than-ideal conditions on Saturday.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Shane Mallia (1:31:45) edged out Benjamin Cherry (1:32:02) by a mere 17 seconds in a thrilling finish to the men&#8217;s 21-kilometre run.<\/p>\n<p>Erin Littlewood (1:09:01) and Kevin Chisholm (1:02:02) were victorious in the 13-kilometre course, whereas Aleara Wallace (18:21) and Otis Jones (15:41) secured the five-kilometre even.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 231px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/DSC5783_86566.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"231\" height=\"347\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Volunteers were a major factor in running the Afterglow event.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ord said Saturday&#8217;s Afterglow event was the worst event he had ever directed weather-wise, yet was also one of the brightest and happiest events he had been involved in.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>EARLY concerns regarding participant numbers due to poor weather conditions were quickly quelled when hundreds of runners turned out for the 2022 Afterglow Night Trail Run event.
