{"id":86478,"date":"2022-12-12T04:00:21","date_gmt":"2022-12-11T17:00:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=86478"},"modified":"2022-12-08T16:08:04","modified_gmt":"2022-12-08T05:08:04","slug":"council-clears-landslip","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/council-clears-landslip\/","title":{"rendered":"Council clears landslip"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FAIRHAVEN residents are calling on the Surf Coast Shire to revegetate an embankment that has incurred several landslips beside the Great Ocean Road.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) stripped the site of trees and plants as a firebreak more than 12-months ago, and several slumps at the area west of Painkalac Creek on the Great Ocean Road had until last week closed the main footpath that connects Airey&#8217;s Inlet and Fairhaven.<\/p>\n<p>Locals say they&#8217;ve spent two-months contacting authorities including council and DELWP about the issue because pedestrians and mobility scooter users had to travel on the road beside cars and feared another slip may occur.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/IMG_0148_43860.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Elderly mobility scooter user Hector Moore said it was &#8220;frightening&#8221; being forced to share the road with cars. Photo: TIM LAMACRAFT<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Council&#8217;s general manager of placemaking and environment Chris Pike thanked &#8220;the community for their patience,&#8221; after the area was cleared of debris last week.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I know this work has taken time as we had to ensure the safety of the site,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The footpath has now reopened for community use and in time for the Great Victorian Bike Ride (GVBR), which passes through Fairhaven today,&#8221; he said on Friday (December 2).<\/p>\n<p>Fairhaven resident David Abbey was sceptical of the timing.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/IMG_0184_73168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mobility scooter Hector Moore (right), with resident Nick Jane who says authorities were warned about the implications of stripping the embankment of vegetation, and wants it replanted.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;They allow an obviously dangerous situation to remain unresolved to &#8216;ensure the safety of the site&#8217;? Photo: GOOGLE MAPS<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Airey&#8217;s Inlet &amp; District Association (AIDA) agree, it&#8217;s President Charlotte Allen saying she&#8217;s worried about how the site will be remedied.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think it would be most unfortunate that as a result of the fire break being put in that we end up with a large retaining wall rather than a green bank,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We understand they might need to put up some form of artificial structure, but we want it to be green and with deep rooted and fire-resistant species that will stabilise the banks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FAIRHAVEN residents are calling on the Surf Coast Shire to revegetate an embankment that has incurred several landslips beside the Great Ocean Road.
