wraps up another year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A LONG-RUNNING partnership between Surf Coast Secondary and Torquay Community Men\u2019s Shed is celebrating wrapping up its tenth year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTuesday Shed\u201d as it is known, has provided projects to students that are eager to undertake practical work and receive mentoring for over a decade, most recently delivering on a Bird Box initiative to provide new homes to birds of Taylor Park on Torquay\u2019s foreshore.<\/p>\n<p>Men\u2019s Shed mentor Paul Ryan has a background in woodworking and has led the construction of 20 bird boxes in Term 4 alongside the students.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 762px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/IMG_8196_25561.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"762\" height=\"508\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Max Jessen and Men&#8217;s Shed mentor Paul Ryan at the drill.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve introduced these Year Nine students to a whole range of systems, plans and methods to put together these first-class bird boxes,\u201d Mr Ryan said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe students have just finished the final stages, putting the oil finish on them, now they will go to the Friends of Taylor Park and make a genuine impact on the community of Torquay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Students were also taught how to properly use hazardous equipment such as bandsaws, drills, and sanding machines under the watchful eyes of Men\u2019s Shed members.<\/p>\n<p>Surf Coast Secondary College education support teacher Katrina Simpson has been supporting Tuesday Shed since the program\u2019s inception ten years ago, outlining how important early exposure to projects such as these can have on high school students.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 702px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/IMG_8199_52191.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"702\" height=\"468\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Phoenix Page and Luke Hosking using the drop-saw.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cSome of these kids might not look like they\u2019re paying attention but let me assure you they can recite the processes we undertake word for word,\u201d Ms Simpson said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis group has completed everything to an immaculate finish, and it really shows on the bird boxes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat these students have done is something to be really proud of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In tandem to Tuesday Shed, Ms Simpson also mentors groups of female students as part of the Torquay Women\u2019s Shed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A LONG-RUNNING partnership between Surf Coast Secondary and Torquay Community Men\u2019s Shed is celebrating wrapping up its tenth year. \u201cTuesday Shed\u201d as it is known, has provided projects to students that are eager to undertake practical work and receive mentoring for over a decade, most recently delivering on a Bird Box initiative to provide new [&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"btn btn-secondary understrap-read-more-link\" href=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/tuesday-shed-wraps-up-another-year\/\">Read More&#8230;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":191,"featured_media":86527,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"inline_featured_image":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[7],"tags":[],"post_folder":[],"class_list":["post-86520","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.7 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>&#039;Tuesday Shed&#039;
