Photo: FACEBOOK\/COBRA INTERNATIONAL<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A big crowd attended the memorial at Cosy Corner on Friday last week and heard stories from Thompson&#8217;s sister Bronwyn Tregenza and son Milan as well as from Craig Stephenson and Carlo Lowdon.<\/p>\n<p>Surfers formed a guard of honour on the beach and then paddled out to form the traditional memorial circle.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_87103\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-87103\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-87103 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/B07K5951-familycro_81542-600x380.jpg?_t=1670980543\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-87103\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">About 60 people, including some of Thompson&#8217;s closest family and friends, took part.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A junior state surfing champion, Thompson began shaping boards in his teens and moved from South Australia to Torquay in the early 1970s.<\/p>\n<p>While in Torquay, Thompson shaped for brands including Rip Curl, Klemm-Bell and Pat Morgan, before founding his own surfboard shaping business, Water Cooled, in 1975.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_87107\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-87107\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-87107 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/B07K5638-PaulCousin_09497-600x380.jpg?_t=1670980837\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-87107\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Former Water Cooled employees Paul Cousins, Maurice Cole, Greg Brown, Pete Smith and John Cairney.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He relocated to Thailand in the 1980s and became a key part of Cobra Surfboards (now Cobra International) establishing its surfboard manufacturing plant.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_87105\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-87105\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-87105 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/B07K5665-6668crow_40561-600x380.jpg?_t=1670980654\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-87105\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The crowd at the memorial at Cosy Corner.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Kym came to Cobra with his Water Cooled brand from Australia back in the &#8217;80s with the dream of shaping amazing boards and developing a mass-production solution for the surfboard industry,&#8221; Cobra International said in a statement.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_87104\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-87104\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-87104 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/B07K5635-TeddyScot_98771-600x380.jpg?_t=1670980587\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-87104\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Teddy, Scotty, Fabian, Noa, Flynn, Milan, Son&#8217;s and Grandson&#8217;s of Kym Thompson.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Kym achieved these goals and so many more along the way, a true industry legend that will be missed by many.
