SUMMER sailing in Torquay will recommence next month as Torquay Sailing Club prepares to relaunch its junior programs for 2023.<\/p>\n
Before its junior green fleet program resumes at the conclusion of the Christmas holidays, Torquay Sailing Club at Fishos is offering a five-day mid-week course for junior sailors on the week starting Monday, January 16.<\/p>\n
Club commodore Chris Hordern said participants, primarily 8-15 year olds, will have the option to take part in either a morning (9am-noon) or afternoon (1-4pm) program.<\/p>\n
“This program would be a great step to take for kids who are looking to join our green fleet, it’s a great introduction to sailing and it gets them up to speed, so when they start green fleet, they’ve already had a bit of a go,” Mr Hordern said.<\/p>\n
The five-day program touches on all the basics of sailing, from sailing preparation to water etiquette, as newcomers and beginners become familiar with the OpenSkiffs and Hobie Wave Catamarans.<\/p>\n
Participants will become proficient in independent sailing by getting out on the water in a group environment led by top-quality instructors from Torquay and Jan Juc.<\/p>\n
Hordern said taking on the summer program was just one of many ways to become part an inclusive and social club.<\/p>\n
“Besides Torquay being unique in the fact that it’s open ocean, it’s what I would coin a grassroots club,” Mr Hordern said.<\/p>\n
“I think there is a view yacht clubs are snobby, high-end, sophisticated places, where in reality a club like Torquay’s is a true community club open to anyone of any background.<\/p>\n
“It’s a great leveller, and a great way to share a common interest in the sport of sailing.”<\/p>\n
