	{"id":88477,"date":"2022-12-30T04:18:08","date_gmt":"2022-12-29T17:18:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=88477"},"modified":"2022-12-30T08:43:33","modified_gmt":"2022-12-29T21:43:33","slug":"festival-of-sails-is-back-bigger-and-better-in-2023-celebrating-180-years-of-the-iconic-passage-race","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/festival-of-sails-is-back-bigger-and-better-in-2023-celebrating-180-years-of-the-iconic-passage-race\/","title":{"rendered":"Festival of Sails is back bigger and better in 2023, celebrating 180 years of the iconic Passage Race"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Geelong&#8217;s Festival of Sails will be celebrating a major milestone and is ready to party when it returns in January 2023, as it salutes the 180th anniversary of its iconic Passage Race between Melbourne and Geelong.<\/p>\n<p>The Passage Race normally attracts more than 200 entries as boats and yachts of all classes take to the waters of Port Phillip Bay for the opening challenge of the four-day regatta, which will run from Thursday, January 26 to Sunday, January 29, 2023<\/p>\n<p>The proudly Geelong-based event is a firm favourite with sailors from all over Australia, and the Royal Geelong Yacht Club expects the opportunity to be part of the 180th anniversary celebrations will be even more of a reason for many of them to head to Corio Bay.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_88479\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-88479\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-88479\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/RGYC_Festival_of_sai_02250.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-88479\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Local family favourites the Mik Maks will feature in the 180th celebration of the Festival of Sails Passage Race.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Festival is Australia&#8217;s oldest sporting event \u2013 older than the Melbourne Cup which began in 1861, older than The Ashes which began in 1882 and looking overseas, older than Wimbledon, which began in in 1887 and the America&#8217;s Cup which began in 1851!<\/p>\n<p>And while it has long been known for its exciting action on the water, the Festival has also become a favorite entertainment destination over the traditional January 26 holiday break.<\/p>\n<p>As the event gets set to party for the 180th, the entertainment lineup has been reinvented to appeal to a more diverse local and visiting audience.<\/p>\n<p>The jangle pop quartet Quivers will be one of the headline acts, along with &#8216;Skyscraper&#8217; Stan Woodhouse, Indie rocker Tam Vantage, cosmic-country-rocker Ben Mastwyk, Winter McQuinn, and Jess Locke, to name just a few of the independent and emerging artists hitting the stages.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_88481\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-88481\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-88481\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/12\/QuiversHollyThomas-B_02245.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-88481\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Holly Thomas and Bella Quinlan (front) and Michael Panton and Sam Nicholson of the The Quivers one of the festival&#8217;s headline acts. Photo: RICK CLIFFORD<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And for the lovers of old school Aussie rock hits and faves, The Badloves, Chocolate Starfish and The Chantoozies are set to deliver a veritable musical feast of classic Aussie rock and pop gems from the 90&#8217;s to now.<\/p>\n<p>Local family favourites the Mik Maks \u2013 who have now notched up 2.6 billion streams on their You Tube channel \u2013 will also be delighting the kids.
