Gates Classic opens the gate for inclusion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ABOUT 500 competitors gathered at Fairhaven SLSC on Sunday for the Tim Gates Classic, an annual fundraiser for the Tim Gates Foundation that helps to develop and upskill the next generation of surf lifesavers.<\/p>\n<p>In the challenging summer heat, athletes of all levels and ages took part in the 5km Eastern View and 10km Spout Creek route to pay tribute to former Fairhaven SLSC member Tim Gates, who tragically lost his life in the water at Fairhaven in 2008.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_89299\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-89299\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-89299 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/TGR_0425_21733-1-600x380.jpg?_t=1673323574\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-89299\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The race exists to support the Fairhaven SLSC and the development of their younger members.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_89302\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-89302\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-89302 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/TGR_0099_21684-1-600x380.jpg?_t=1673323590\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-89302\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The 5km race went down to Eastern View, while the 10km course extended to Spout Creek.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Fairhaven SLSC president Nancy Joseph said she was chuffed with the overall turnout, particularly in that the event hadn&#8217;t run for three years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The weather played kindly and it was an absolutely fantastic day.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We had over 500 competitors, with the youngest competitor being four months old and the oldest being 85 years old.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We had 23 individual local traders who donated prizes and supported the event, it was fantastic to have that local support.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Great Ocean Properties were also the principal supporter, and we are so thrilled that they have stuck with us during the 12 years of this race.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_89301\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-89301\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-89301 size-thumbnail\" id=\"caption-attachment-89301\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Tim Gates Classic was run for the 12th time in 2023.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Oliver Griffith and Johanna Clark were victorious in the 10km race in the open age male and female divisions, while Gus Tritton and Annabelle Shannon came out on top in the 5km race.<\/p>\n<p>Adding to the event&#8217;s inclusive nature, the committee was thrilled to have Achilles Melbourne (a running club for people who are visually impaired and disabled) join them for the event.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_89304\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A team from Achilles Melbourne also participated in the race.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;The turnout from all was just fabulous and the beauty about this run is that plenty of people come back year after year to support Tim and his infectious personality that people flocked to,&#8221; Ms Joseph said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a major fundraiser for us and the class=\"wp-caption-text\">The race had both 5km and 10km distances.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>All funds raised from the event will go towards the Tim Gates Foundation which aims to support future pathways for athletes at the surf club.<\/p>\n<p>At the time of publishing, the total fundraising figures was estimated to be more than
