{"id":8961,"date":"2018-03-07T05:48:04","date_gmt":"2018-03-06T18:48:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=8961"},"modified":"2018-03-09T13:44:12","modified_gmt":"2018-03-09T02:44:12","slug":"vichealth-funds-geelongs-healthy-choices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/living\/vichealth-funds-geelongs-healthy-choices\/","title":{"rendered":"VicHealth funds Geelong\u2019s Healthy Choices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The City of Greater Geelong has received a grant from VicHealth to support reducing the amount of soft drink promotion in City-operated leisure centres.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The funding will help the City implement its Healthy Choices \u2013 Sugar Sweetened Beverages Strategy to reduce the proportion of sugary drinks on display in fridges and increase the promotion of water as the drink of choice for health.<\/p>\n<p>Acting Director Community Life Fiona Reidy said the strategy will be implemented over a two-year period and the VicHealth grant will provide valuable support.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy providing and highlighting healthy choices, we anticipate positive health outcomes over time,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe City is delighted to be partnering with VicHealth. The strategy will be implemented by sharing relevant information and offering support and suggestions about how the display of Sugar Sweetened Beverages can be reduced.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Geelong mayor Bruce Harwood believed the grant would be a great help to the City in implementing the Healthy Choices strategy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis strategy is about making sure water is displayed more prominently in our leisure centre fridges, while reducing the proportion of sugary drinks on display \u2013 encouraging people to make healthier choices,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, the display of soft drinks will be reduced to less than 20 per cent of fridge space in the City\u2019s leisure centres to encourage people to opt for water.<\/p>\n<p>Geelong\u2019s Adult Health report in 2016 found 12 per cent consumed sugar sweetened soft drinks daily, higher than the Victorian average of 11 per cent.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The City of Greater Geelong has received a grant from VicHealth to support reducing the amount of soft drink promotion in City-operated leisure centres.
