THIS year\u2019s Surf Coast Relay For Life begins at 6.45pm tomorrow (Friday) with the opening ceremony followed by a lap of honour for cancer survivors and carers and a candlelight ceremony at Polwarth Oval, off Merrijig Drive, North Torquay.<\/p>\n
Members of the 21 fundraising teams will carry batons as they circle the oval through the night.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe symbolism of a twilight start, carrying on through the dark till dawn, then through the day until the afternoon closing ceremony is that even if things look bleak, the new day brings hope for a brighter future,\u201d committee co-chair Magdalena Wheatland said.<\/p>\n
Participants know their efforts are helping the Cancer Council in its research, support and educational programs to battle the scourge of cancer.<\/p>\n
Researchers have been making significant discoveries in preventative and treatment technologies, offering new hope for those diagnosed with cancer.<\/p>\n
Mrs Wheatland said Relay for Life was a chance to recognise and celebrate those who have overcome cancer or are undergoing treatment, as well as those who are giving their time, love and support to others facing cancer.<\/p>\n
It was also a time to remember those lost to cancer, to support those still fighting the disease and to honour those who have fought in the past.<\/p>\n
Mrs Wheatland said a full entertainment schedule was in place for the relay, with activities for children and food vendors on site.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Surf Coast community has shown over the past year that it is a generous supporter of good causes,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are urging people to come along and show their support by registering to walk or run a few laps with the teams.<\/p>\n
