	{"id":9101,"date":"2018-03-14T07:52:02","date_gmt":"2018-03-13T20:52:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=9101"},"modified":"2018-03-27T15:21:42","modified_gmt":"2018-03-27T04:21:42","slug":"lady-tigers-leading-way","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/lady-tigers-leading-way\/","title":{"rendered":"Lady Tigers leading the way"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE state government announced a program last week to promote more senior roles for women in sport, but a group of lady Tigers is already leading the way.<\/p>\n<p>The Torquay football club has four women in committee roles \u2013 Jenny Wood (football club president), Bernadette Purton (secretary), Nicole Nelson (treasurer) and Paris Nigro (administration officer) \u2013 and Megan Mifsud is president of the closely-associated netball club.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Wood said she and Ms Nelson had been on the football committee for five years, but welcomed more women stepping up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think a lot of women are intimidated by being on an all-male committee, and we\u2019ve also brought netball into the football committee this year to get a really good relationship going but you also feel more comfortable to have more females around.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just think it\u2019s really shifting out here \u2013 I\u2019ve been part of the juniors for seven years, trying to get more and more women involved and comfortable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe more (women) we get, the more we\u2019ll attract, and I think that\u2019s what\u2019s more important than anything else; to make it a nice environment for anyone, whether they\u2019re on a committee or otherwise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms Mifsud said four years ago \u201cit might have been a little bit intimidating\u201d to come to the clubrooms on a Thursday night, \u201cbut not now\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be on a committee, you don\u2019t need to know the ins and outs of sport. We always get people for the netball club saying \u201coh, I wouldn\u2019t know what to do, I don\u2019t know anything about netball\u2019 \u2013 you don\u2019t need to know anything if you can use Excel and do a spreadsheet, so I think it\u2019s breaking those barriers about making people feel comfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms Nelson said the Tigers still needed more volunteers to help out, particularly over the Easter weekend.<\/p>\n<p>For more information, email admin@torquaytigers.com.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE state government announced a program last week to promote more senior roles for women in sport, but a group of lady Tigers is already leading the way.
