{"id":91935,"date":"2023-02-03T04:00:23","date_gmt":"2023-02-02T17:00:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=91935"},"modified":"2023-02-01T15:29:16","modified_gmt":"2023-02-01T04:29:16","slug":"sea-of-yellow-brightens-torquays-esplanade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/sea-of-yellow-brightens-torquays-esplanade\/","title":{"rendered":"Sea of yellow brightens Torquay&#8217;s Esplanade"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SUNFLOWERS of all shapes and sizes blossomed on Torquay&#8217;s Esplanade for the second annual Celebration of Sunflowers.<\/p>\n<p>Event founder and organiser Bronwyn McNamee said the weekend&#8217;s event attracted a &#8220;terrific&#8221; turnout.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 642px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/0H8A4147_88544.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"642\" height=\"428\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cindy (from Torquay) with her kids Blake, 14 and Madelen, 15 with their entries into the &#8220;Best dressed&#8221; category.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;It was amazing to see the community back together again for the celebration,&#8221; Ms McNamee said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I tend to liken the celebration to that of small event at a local country show.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We had lots of people passing by because of the Cadel Evans Race, but also dozens of participants that brought along sunflowers which had blossomed at their homes after months of work.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 611px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/0H8A4221_08747.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"611\" height=\"407\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Surf Coast Celebration of Sunflowers team.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;There were an abundance of flowers that were successfully grown with tremendous results, and others that were not quite as successful.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But that&#8217;s part of the fun with an event like this, residents coming together and sharing what they were able to do.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ms McNamee said the efforts her team made facilitating the Celebration of Sunflowers possible.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 516px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/0H8A4057_35216.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"516\" height=\"344\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Councillor Rose Hodge handing out prizes to a pair of young growers.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;My team helped with everything from setting up the event to getting the word out there and were wonderful in helping me whenever I needed it,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We had Dianne O&#8217;Dwyer who put out a blanket and read stories involving sunflowers to the kids that attended, and Cr Rose Hodge was marvellous in assisting me handing out the prizes we had.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 567px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/0H8A4039_88240.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"567\" height=\"378\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A modest turnout arrived for the Celebration.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ms McNamee said she expects the event&#8217;s social media page to continue receiving photos as sunflowers continue to sprout after a delayed start to the growing season.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SUNFLOWERS of all shapes and sizes blossomed on Torquay&#8217;s Esplanade for the second annual Celebration of Sunflowers.
