{"id":91977,"date":"2023-02-03T04:00:56","date_gmt":"2023-02-02T17:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=91977"},"modified":"2023-02-01T16:17:29","modified_gmt":"2023-02-01T05:17:29","slug":"community-gathers-to-celebrate-australia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/community-gathers-to-celebrate-australia\/","title":{"rendered":"Community gathers to celebrate Australia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ANNUAL Australia Day celebrations by the Anglesea River drew a crowd of hundreds in what was one of the Surf Coast&#8217;s largest events of its kind on January 26.<\/p>\n<p>As the local Lions club ferried children in train rides beside the river, organisers estimated 300 others watched, listened, and sung along to a range of speakers and musicians, including Indigenous academic and commentator\u00a0Anthony Dillon.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People say Australia Day is divisive day, the point I want to make is days aren&#8217;t divisive, people are divisive,&#8221; Mr Dillon said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_91998\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-91998\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-91998\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/In-Article-2023-02-01T160552.044.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/In-Article-2023-02-01T160552.044.png 600w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/In-Article-2023-02-01T160552.044-300x190.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-91998\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Billy Tea Bush Band were joined by the Anglesea Community Rock Choir to perform I Am Australian.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;People can have different opinions, there&#8217;s nothing wrong with that, there&#8217;s nothing wrong with disagreements, but respect other people, respect others to have a different opinion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He said it was his wish that people could come together for a national day that focuses on positivity, rather than negativity.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When I look at place like this, Anglesea, we&#8217;re here united, we&#8217;re happy\u2026 it&#8217;s an imperfect country, but it&#8217;s still a great country.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re not celebrating invasion, theft or whatever, we&#8217;re acknowledging that; that happened.
