Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We were very conscious that it might happen\u2026 that summer,&#8221; Ms Faggetter said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;d had 10 months of drought, there was not a drop in the dams, it was tinder-dry.<\/p>\n<p>Her recollections of February 16, 1983, remain vivid to this day.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That day \u2013 Ash Wednesday \u2013 it was 43 [degrees] I think, it was incredibly hot\u2026 and the winds were very capricious, they would come and go,&#8221; she remembered.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Faggetter had her four-year old daughter, and called her neighbour Jenny Hughes to offer her child a lift home from school due to the heat.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As I turned into the drive there was a brilliant blue sky, but there was an incredible column of smoke over in the distance towards Deans Marsh.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/Fagetter-Cimarron-ne_40517.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"359\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A newspaper clipping with Rachel&#8217;s father Ted Faggetter outside Cimarron after the fires. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ms Hughes&#8217;s husband Howard was in the CFA and the neighbours used his emergency services radio to keep them informed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At six o&#8217;clock police came and said &#8216;you must get out, just leave&#8217; and we didn&#8217;t quarrel with that,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We got to Anglesea and it was chaos, there were no evacuation plans, ever, and no one had a clue.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Amid the chaos, Ms Faggetter said authorities directed them on to Torquay<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What a foolish thing to do, I will never forget that drive, because as I was driving out of Anglesea the fire was behind us&#8230; reaching to the sky.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ms Faggetter tuned into the 6am radio news the next morning after sleeping on a friend&#8217;s floor in Geelong.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The ABC said the following towns have ceased to exist, and Aireys being &#8216;A&#8217; was the first one,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_93141\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-93141\" style=\"width: 598px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-93141 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/09.02.2023_15.13.16_REC.png?_t=1675916019\" alt=\"\" width=\"598\" height=\"308\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/09.02.2023_15.13.16_REC.png 722w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/09.02.2023_15.13.16_REC-300x155.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 598px) 100vw, 598px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-93141\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Faggetter&#8217;s home &#8216;Cimarron&#8217; on Gilbert Street in Aireys Inlet was one of few in that area to survive. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She and her husband later returned to find a &#8220;miracle&#8221;; their Gilbert Street home was still standing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was sitting on ash, but it itself had not been breached, amazing; every other house on the hillside had gone.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was as if nothing could ever live again\u2026 I felt as if the soil had been burnt.
