Photo: LORNE HISTORICAL SOCIETY<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So I ended up going around and chopping around the rings to stop it spreading.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The clubhouse was reduced to ashes and the machinery shed was a pile of ruin, but somehow the Wheals&#8217; home, which backs on to the golf course, survived.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We got equipment lent to us, the machinery companies were really good &#8211; lent us a greens mower, a tractor, we had that sort of stuff sitting here ready to go that quickly,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 605px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/IMG_1501_20910.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"605\" height=\"404\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;There was nothing left, no trees between fairways,&#8221; Mr Wheal said of the course after the fires.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Wreal said a priority was getting a clubhouse back up and running so the club&#8217;s liquor licence was not voided.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They put one of those site sheds in the car park and ran a temporary bar out of that, because the clubhouse was still a pile of burnt ruins.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They got the machinery shed up pretty quick and then this was the clubhouse for 12 months while the other one was getting rebuilt.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Despite there being little left of the course as it once existed, Mr Wheal said play resumed shortly after the fires.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t think it stopped, to be honest; golf continued.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_93163\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-93163\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-93163 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/IMG_1504_20983_tn.jpg?_t=1675917601\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/IMG_1504_20983_tn.jpg 600w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/IMG_1504_20983_tn-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/IMG_1504_20983_tn-272x182.jpg 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-93163\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mr Wheal behind the green of the first hole, looking over to where his family home survived the fires.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The whole town sort of kicked in helping clean up because there was a lot of houses around the other side of town that got burnt, but the main part of town was okay.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There was a lot of cleaning up to do, all burnt trees, limbs on the ground.
