{"id":93722,"date":"2023-02-16T15:58:30","date_gmt":"2023-02-16T04:58:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=93722"},"modified":"2023-02-16T15:58:30","modified_gmt":"2023-02-16T04:58:30","slug":"responders-reflect-on-fire-and-local-reaction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/ash-wednesday\/responders-reflect-on-fire-and-local-reaction\/","title":{"rendered":"Responders reflect on fire and local reaction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>EMERGENCY services personnel gathered at Anglesea Fire Station yesterday morning for a private acknowledgement of the devastating Ash Wednesday bushfires.<\/p>\n<p>Veterans of the February 1983 campaign, current emergency services personnel and local civic leaders paused to reflect on the historic blaze to mark its 40-year anniversary.<\/p>\n<p>The 10am service offered first responders quiet moments to contemplate ahead of the public events, including a Surf Coast Shire-run service at Aireys Inlet and a Anglesea and District Historical Society exhibition in the afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Aireys Inlet Country Fire Authority (CFA) brigade member Ross Girvan, who was part of the local response to Ash Wednesday fires four decades ago, said he helped organise the event following an approach from Surf Coast Shire Council in the lead-up to yesterday\u2019s anniversary.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_93723\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-93723\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-93723\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/230214RossGirvanedit_14060.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"470\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-93723\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aireys Inlet CFA member Ross Girvan.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got the shire mayor speaking along with a number of agencies and key people,\u201d Mr Girvan said ahead of yesterday\u2019s event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s acknowledging how people are served in all agencies and also people that are around and involved in emergency services along the Surf Coast today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSurf Coast Shire councillors approached me. They just wanted to acknowledge people that served during Ash Wednesday and I thought it would be nice to recognise all our people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Girvan said about \u201cthree or four\u201d of the local frontline firefighters from Ash Wednesday remained active at Aireys Inlet as 40 years passed since the blaze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat would be similar to most of the coastal towns.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-93726\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/AireysInletshop_41500.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"404\" \/><\/p>\n<p>He said the period of reflection yesterday morning intended to have a neutral tone so that those involved in the tragedy could reflect on it as they wished.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think everyone&#8217;s different, so everyone&#8217;s got their own memory of what their own experience was.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome people would soon as not talk about it. Photos: RITCHIE FAMILY COLLECTION<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Girvan said \u201cmoving forward\u201d had remained his mantra in the aftermath of Ash Wednesday, as his role in the community \u2013 both as a firefighter and working for the local water authority \u2013 meant there wasn\u2019t much time to dwell on its events.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the time was it was certainly pretty frightening.
