{"id":94142,"date":"2023-02-23T04:00:19","date_gmt":"2023-02-22T17:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=94142"},"modified":"2023-02-23T09:02:37","modified_gmt":"2023-02-22T22:02:37","slug":"sand-sculptures-to-celebrate-25th-anniversary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/sand-sculptures-to-celebrate-25th-anniversary\/","title":{"rendered":"Sand sculptures to celebrate 25th anniversary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LORNE Candle and Castle organisers are expecting large crowds tomorrow (Saturday, February 25) afternoon for the 25th anniversary of the popular community sand sculpture competition.<\/p>\n<p>More than 150 participants are expected to take part in the event at St George River, where participants will build a sand sculpture and illuminate the creations with candles.<\/p>\n<p>Lorne Candle and Castle competition founder Chloe Messner said she was excited to see locals of all ages lighting up the beach with their own masterpieces.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_94144\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-94144\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-94144\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/273420734_4809401772_77916.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"533\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-94144\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">An overflowing volcano sculpture was crowned as the 2022 winner.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I started the event in 1998 at a time when Lorne didn&#8217;t have many community gatherings and it&#8217;s provided a great way for people to connect.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s all about fun and doesn&#8217;t cost anything to participate in!<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve had dragons, tables that people have eaten their picnics off, castles, moats, and plenty more made over the years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The kids that came to our first one 25 years ago are now bringing their kids down to it too.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We hope it continues to provide plenty of happiness for the community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_94148\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-94148\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-94148 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/02\/PXL_20210227_082835063-600x380.jpg?_t=1677034470\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-94148\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The event is open to people of all ages.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Messner said there would be plenty of prizes on offer for the winners, with the top three creations receiving trophies made out of agapanthus plants.<\/p>\n<p>All other participants will receive prizes from local shops including Lorne Books, Flying Fishes, Wait to Go and Quiksilver, who have been donating prizes for the past 25 years.<\/p>\n<p>The event will start at 6.30pm.<\/p>\n<p>For more details, search &#8220;Lorne sand and candle competition&#8221; on Facebook.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LORNE Candle and Castle organisers are expecting large crowds tomorrow (Saturday, February 25) afternoon for the 25th anniversary of the popular community sand sculpture competition.
