{"id":95703,"date":"2023-03-10T04:24:01","date_gmt":"2023-03-09T17:24:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=95703"},"modified":"2023-04-20T11:42:35","modified_gmt":"2023-04-20T01:42:35","slug":"a-platform-to-renew-contemporary-arts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/living\/a-platform-to-renew-contemporary-arts\/","title":{"rendered":"A platform to renew contemporary arts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Geelong not-for-profit arts organisation Platform Arts has quietly undergone a transformation, becoming Geelong&#8217;s only dedicated contemporary multi-arts space.<\/p>\n<p>While many within the Greater Geelong community have a history with the Old Courthouse building and the organisation, formerly Courthouse Youth Arts, many people are unaware of its timely restructure and rebrand.<\/p>\n<p>After community research, Platform Arts identified Geelong&#8217;s need for accessible, all-ages, diverse spaces supporting non-traditional and experimental arts.<\/p>\n<p>Under this strategic shift, Platform Arts has tripled its programming, offering exhibitions, performances, and events that increase contemporary arts experiences for Greater Geelong artists and audiences.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_95705\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-95705\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-95705\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/03\/PLATFORMARTS02_93600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-95705\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Platform Arts presented Still Here, Now last year. Photo: LEIKO LOPEZ<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>2022 saw their gallery program open the walls, floors and ceiling to over 200 artists spanning Greater Geelong, Surf Coast, Bellarine and beyond, as part of the After Walter Hopps exhibition. First Nations curated and artist-led group show Still Here, Now<\/p>\n<p>, became the grounds for the organisation to introduce First Nations creative program, YOOKAPA.<\/p>\n<p>Projects include a giant mural commission to reimagine Labuan Square, Norlane, curated by Gunditjmara artist Tarryn Love alongside Nikki McKenzie and Norm Stanley of Wurri-Ki Culture.<\/p>\n<p>Platform Arts also supports performance makers spanning Lorne to Geelong with opportunities to present their work in the Geelong Arts Precinct.<\/p>\n<p>A successful production of acclaimed Australian play The Bleeding Tree has just wrapped, written by Angus Cerini and presented by Anglesea Performing Arts.<\/p>\n<p>Platform LAB is their new career-accelerator program that supports artists with funding, mentorship, and presentation opportunities, which champions regional artists by connecting them with opportunities with major events and festivals beyond Geelong.<\/p>\n<p>Platform LAB alumni, Aphids, exemplify this successful model.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_95707\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-95707\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-95707\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/03\/PLATFORMARTS01_93631.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-95707\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bodies of Water at Eastern Beach last year. Photo: BEN HOFFMAN<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After a sell-out debut at Melbourne&#8217;s Arthouse and a recent showcase at Mona Foma in Hobart, Aphids will be returning to Platform Arts, bringing The Director to Geelong audiences.<\/p>\n<p>The bold performance stars charismatic ex-funeral director, Scott Turnbull, and artist, Lara Thoms,<\/p>\n<p>who balance macabre reality, playfulness and the tragic elements of death.
