{"id":96851,"date":"2023-03-28T04:00:36","date_gmt":"2023-03-27T17:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=96851"},"modified":"2023-03-22T15:32:33","modified_gmt":"2023-03-22T04:32:33","slug":"fidler-begins-fiddling-with-historic-bellbrae-estate-tree","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/fidler-begins-fiddling-with-historic-bellbrae-estate-tree\/","title":{"rendered":"Carving begins on 120 year old historic Bellbrae Estate tree"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AN ARTISTIC transformation has begun on a 120-year-old Monterey Pine tree at Bellbrae Estate, with local artist Brock Fidler revving up his chainsaw to kick off the exciting new project.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Mr Fidler chipped into the wood for the first time, tasked with carving an ocean landscape out of the humungous tree which fell during wild storms in October last year.<\/p>\n<p>Having carved sculptures from trees of a similar age, Fidler said he was excited to have commenced crafting what will arguably be the biggest carving on the Surf Coast.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_96864\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-96864\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-96864 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/03\/IMG_2663_61341-1-600x380.jpg?_t=1679442298\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-96864\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fidler has begun carving out segments of the tree.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019ll be one of, if not the biggest in the area,\u201d Fidler said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis ocean themed carving will be a bit abstract\u2026 the flow of the ocean is the idea\u2026 trying to get this flowy style in the wood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve worked with Richard from Bellbrae Estate on the design and he&#8217;s given me a bit of freedom of expression which is great.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m thinking the project will take me about a month and then we will have a big bonfire opening evening when it\u2019s finished.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_96863\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-96863\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-96863 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/03\/IMG_2670_61306-1-600x380.jpg?_t=1679442291\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-96863\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The sculpture will be one of the biggest on the Surf Coast.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Fidler has already begun carving lines and patterns into the tree to get showcase the motions of the ocean, while any major offcuts thus far have been smoothed out and will be used as seating for the winery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve done about five days so far&#8230; I had a guy come in and help me chip out the debris and it\u2019s only just gotten to the stage to properly start.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe tree is a lot bigger than I thought and the pieces are about as heavy as what I weigh\u2026 not until you get right to the core of it is when you figure out what exactly you can work with.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI plan on putting a few steps in so I can climb to the top to spray it\u2026 and that way if kids are playing there is some easy access for them to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_96862\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-96862\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-96862 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/03\/IMG_2673_61354-1-600x380.jpg?_t=1679442283\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-96862\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The sculpture is expected to be completed in a month.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Once completed, Fidler hopes to have a community unveiling event with wine, cheese and a bonfire.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AN ARTISTIC transformation has begun on a 120-year-old Monterey Pine tree at Bellbrae Estate, with local artist Brock Fidler revving up his chainsaw to kick off the exciting new project.
