THE STATE government has wrapped up a $2-million coastal protection project at Eastern View.<\/p>\n
A new revetment wall has ben installed at the Devil’s Elbow carpark and rock bags placed at important infrastructure near the Great Ocean Road’s Memorial Arch.<\/p>\n
The government started works last year and went ahead with the intensive revetment wall at Eastern View despite the idea attracting “limited support” at a community listening post during planning.<\/p>\n
The government’s environment department said at the time that the wall would be landscaped to have minimal visual impact on the coast, and the rock bags would be removed once a permanent solution to erosion in the area was settled.<\/p>\n
A revetment was recommended as a preferred option for long-term protection due to the extent of erosion risk, and is considered a “last resort” option under state coastal policies.<\/p>\n
The government said erosion along the Surf Coast was ongoing concern.<\/p>\n
“Coastal erosion is a natural process, but also a complex issue that impacts many parts of our coastline. At Eastern View we’ve delivered a range of mitigation measures to protect the Great Ocean Road area,” Environment Minister Ingrid Stitt said.<\/p>\n
“Thanks to the local community for their input during planning last year and their patience and cooperation as the works were delivered on the beach.”<\/p>\n
Western Victoria MP Gayle Tierney said the protective works aimed to ensure the ongoing preservation of the Great Ocean Road for locals and tourists.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
