{"id":97664,"date":"2023-04-04T04:00:40","date_gmt":"2023-04-03T18:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=97664"},"modified":"2023-03-30T09:56:09","modified_gmt":"2023-03-29T22:56:09","slug":"groms-attack-solid-waves-to-crown-state-championship-winners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/sport\/groms-attack-solid-waves-to-crown-state-championship-winners\/","title":{"rendered":"Groms attack solid waves to crown state championship winners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>STATE champions have been crowned at Round 3 of the Woolworths Victorian Junior Titles, with surfers putting it all on the line in powerful waves at Gunnamatta Beach on the Mornington Peninsula.<\/p>\n<p>In pulsing four to six-foot conditions, competitors went as large as they could to try to take home the coveted state title and inch closer to booking a spot in the Victorian State Team for the Australian Titles later this year.<\/p>\n<p>The Under 16 Girls division was said to be one of the highlights of the weekend, with Peninsula stars Ava Holland (Dromana) and Sara Hickson (Rye) going toe to toe.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_97686\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-97686\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-97686 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/03\/AvaHolland_NC_0F3A58_85593-1-1-600x380.jpg?_t=1680058822\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-97686\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ava Holland pushing through a big backhand turn.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the final, Hickson kicked off proceedings with a huge 9.17 for three hammering powerful snaps, putting her in fantastic stead early on.<\/p>\n<p>Seconds after, Hickson&#8217;s wave, Ava Holland received a large set wave to the head, which also snapped her board before she could even get a wave.<\/p>\n<p>After swimming to collect her replacement board, Holland threw everything at her next wave but came unstuck, leaving Hickson to steady for the event win and state title crown<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_97685\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-97685\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-97685 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/03\/Site5_NC_0F3A5469_85554-1-1-600x380.jpg?_t=1680058810\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-97685\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">More than 50 competitors took on the weekend&#8217;s event.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hickson said she was thrilled to use her home break knowledge to book a spot at the Australian Titles later this year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I just knew I had to head out the back and find a couple of good waves to get the win.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It [feels] really good to win the state title.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On the other side of the draw, Rye Cicero (Sandy Point) was able to take a commanding win, stopping a potential three-peat by Jerry Kelly (Barwon Heads), who had already claimed the state title by winning the first two events of the state series.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_97684\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-97684\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-97684 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/03\/JerryKelly_NC_0F3A57_85560-1-1-600x380.jpg?_t=1680058798\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-97684\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jerry Kelly (Barwon Heads) had already claimed the U\/16 Boys title before the event.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Cicero showed he wasn&#8217;t going to hold back on any section or big powerful manoeuvres, securing two solid scores for a hammering range of turns.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was a good final, I managed to find a few waves which were enjoyable to surf on,&#8221;
