{"id":98410,"date":"2023-04-11T04:49:10","date_gmt":"2023-04-10T18:49:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=98410"},"modified":"2023-04-05T20:49:32","modified_gmt":"2023-04-05T10:49:32","slug":"surf-coast-group-celebrate-21-years-of-being-active","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/surf-coast-group-celebrate-21-years-of-being-active\/","title":{"rendered":"Surf Coast group celebrate 21 years of being active"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MORE than 80 members of the Life Activities Club Surf Coast celebrated the club&#8217;s 21st anniversary, toasting more than two decades of retired and semi-retired locals being socially and physically active in the community.<\/p>\n<p>Founded by Dr Anne Stephenson and Laura Connor, Life Activities Club Surf Coast facilitates groups including walking , resistance training, table tennis, knitting, scrabble and cinema groups to keep members engaged in activities.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_98421\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-98421\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-98421 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/04\/kjjk-600x380.jpg?_t=1680571749\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-98421\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The event was attended by 80 people from around the Surf Coast.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Life Activities Club Surf Coast president Annelies Gerritsen said the team was thrilled to toast 21 years of keeping people moving at Torquay Bowls Club late last month.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_98423\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-98423\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-98423 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/04\/Peter-Sweeten-talking-600x380.jpg?_t=1680571793\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-98423\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Life member Peter Sweeten talking to the group at the 21st year celebrations.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The group has just grown and grown\u2026 we now have 380 members and we are all doing really well,&#8221; Mrs Gerritsen said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It all started when Dr Anne started to get many patients who were lonely and depressed and she thought the group could be a great way of getting them socially and physically active.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have activities for everyone including those who can&#8217;t be physically active like cinema groups, lunch groups and more.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To have 80 people at our anniversary event was just fantastic&#8230; we even had Rose Hodge attend who represented the Council and our co-founder Laura Connor who spoke about the history of the group.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_98420\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-98420\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-98420 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/04\/l-600x380.jpg?_t=1680571735\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-98420\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The group meet several times a week for activities that allow them to be physically and socially active.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Gerritsen said the group continue to be humbled by the support of all local people, however currently aren&#8217;t seeking any new members due to ongoing demand.<\/p>\n<p>For more, head to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lifesurfcoast.org.au\/home\/\">www.lifesurfcoast.org.au\/home\/<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MORE than 80 members of the Life Activities Club Surf Coast celebrated the club&#8217;s 21st anniversary, toasting more than two decades of retired and semi-retired locals being socially and physically active in the community.
